It would be interesting to get the perspective of someone who lives in Japan: are the Miyatas sold there still made domestically? Are they still the dominant company? Are they well regarded? Do they still produce a full line or have they specialized in a particular niche in the market? The Koga Miyata shows they still build at the high end.

The thing I most hate about my Miyata 916 is also what I most like about it...
The previous owner tore off all of the decals and the head badge. It makes it a great under cover bike I can use as a commuter and feel less paranoid locking up, but it also makes it less preistine and beautiful. The paint job is PERFECT outside of the missing decals...and I've yet to find anyone who replicates them.

After considerable review, it seems the Miyata cult is only dangerous if you try to take their bikes. In other words, they'll give up their bikes when you "pry their dead, cold fingers" from them....this sounds like a lot like another issue...
...then again, the Miyata Tax is probably just around the corner.

(I was actually trying to replace the hoods on the original non-aero levers--also Shimano 600ex (6207 I think)--and I ended up finding these on ebay for $10-15 less than the hoods alone...so I upgraded...I guess.)
The rear derailleur is a Suntour XCD 6000 accushift (longest derailleur name evar), an "upgrade" by the first owner from the original Shimano Deerhead. Looks like this up close:
I don't use indexing on this, but it's flawless in friction mode.
The FD is the original Deerhead (old XT).

And a quick shout out to the odd-ball glued-and-screwed Miyata MTB's. I have a clapped out Elevation 5000 that I keep reconfiguring since it is such a cool platform to build around.
Attached is a picture of it in its brief guise as a fixed gear. Sorry about the horrible stem, its all that I had sitting there that would fit at the time. Frame is currently in the rafters waiting to be reborn.

I love my Miyata 1100a Alumitech road bike.
I've got it set up as a fixed gear bike (don't worry, didn't drew it or sell offf any parts)
not the prettiest lugs but very fast and light.

I meet Mr. Miyata back in the late 80's. At the time the shop I worked at was one their biggest dealers.
I also owned a 1 of a kind Trail Runner from 1991. It was built to American specs but had a crazy Japanese paint scheme. They made only 1 in just a few sizes. I owned the 18" which my dumbass brother sold when I moved to Florida.

I always like to show off my Miyata's:
Here is a 1992 1000LT and my wife's Sport ten that I upgrade to 12 and have also put on some weinmann wheels with campy high flange hubs and grip shifters and new bars (took all the steel off it,) nice and light now. On the 1000 I have also put on a Brooks B17 Honey with large rivets. I've also recently rebuilt/overhauled the 610 and sold it, (huge bike 64cm) and have just the other day picked up a beautiful small 210 (49cm) no picture it is a work in progress ie: I have it apart it is in top notch condition tho.

Steel is real, baby!
I bought one on a semi-whim. Found one on Craig's List. Talked the owner down from $350 to $275. Turns out it's one of the nicest bikes I've ever ridden.
1990 Alumitech 721A. I just love it. Component-wise, the only thing original is the front derailleur. It has a couple of quirks, but the frame is SOOO smooth. Who say's aluminum is harsh?!

I have one for sale, a Team Miyata from the early 80's. Perhaps T-Mar would be so kind as to identify the year from the serial number. I got the bike in the early 80's and it was the last bike that I raced upon.

I had a six ten that was literally pulled out of the trailer that was about to haul it to the dump. Unfortunately not my size.
