I scored a decent deal on an "old hybrid" that turned out to be a miyata under many layers of really flaky paint. The brown peels off with masking tape or a finger nail and the underlying layers all seem pretty soft too. It had flat bars and grip shifters on it when I got it so those had to go. I think the frame is a 1988 model since the rear wheel is 40 spokes. I have a scruffy Sakae Randnner bar that I am going to put on it and some 105 DT shifters too. Might go with modern brake levers but otherwise I am really looking forward to cleaning all the parts up and getting the frame painted too... I am still unsure about what route I'm going to go with that.

The crank is a deore but the lettering and anodizing has been worn right off... gonna soda-blast the crank and seatpost for sure, might do the stem and bars too. I like a satin finish. I think I will replace the biopace rings with stainless ones since the inner ring is already a 24T stainlses. IRD freewheel on the back already too, what a score. I'll put different tires on this beast too since I want to get fenders one day when I take it on a worthy trip. The headset that came on this bike is more like a bunch of headset pieces cobbled together so I'll have to pick out something new for that too... might go needle bearing.

I also picked up a damaged green triple cross frame that is pretty nice still and likely salvageable, but that's going to the back of the line for now.

I just purchased a Triplex Aero off eBay for pretty cheap, it's a spanish knockoff of the c-record version. Looks pretty nice.

It's official: I now own my brother-in-law's '86 912. He decided he liked the Nishiki touring bike I just put together better. Unfortunately, the Miyata is too big for me; I think it's about a 58cm frame. That's way too much bike for me, so I guess I'll clean it up and sell it. There are a few more paint chips than I'd like to see, but there's not rust, and nothing is bent or broken. It's a decent bike.

Snagged this off CL over the holiday. IMHO, if you're gonna have a 210, '85 is the year to have! This is as found, and it's in the queue for 'freshening up." It's got these super-cool IRC 27 x 1 3/8 knobbies on it. A bike buddy of mine was so taken with them that he almost didn't notice the rest of the bike. Looks like it was bought and hung in a garage. Doesn't look like the chain has ever been up on the big ring. Forgive the photo...snapped when I picked it up. Too bad the rack is gone.

Well I've mostly finished my restoration that I posted about upthread if anyone is curious it turns out the frame is an '87 not an '89. Next time I'll put the right decals on.

Got a used Koga Miyata Gents Racer Carbolite last winter, had a pretty terrible paint job and lots of chips/scratches, so I decided to sand it down and put on some clearcoat.
That's what it finally looks like (some components differ from this picture in the version I'm riding right now - drivetrain is now completely Campa Record, brakes are Super Record, Saddle now is a Specialized Toupe S-works) & it rides simply great.

This is my 1980 thorougbred: a Koga-Miyata FullPro-L. The 1st pics is from 2005 and shows how the bike looked when I picked it up. The 2nd pic is a recent pic and it shows the bike's current configuration. This is how I will be going to use it upcoming spring

The Koga-Miyata FullPro and FullPro-L were available as regular production bike and as custom frame on special request. This is a custom built example. The geometry is almost square and several finishing and construction details differ from the production frame.

Just joined tonight. I bought a 1984 Sherwood Green Miyata 610 new in 1984 for maybe $375 or so. This has been my only road bike for 29 years. I always liked it, but didn't know how popular it was until I stopped by a bike shop near the start of a local rail trail in Ayer, MA. The owner told me my 610 is a really great bike and that I should never get rid of it.

I'm replacing the 5-speed freewheel with a NOS Suntour Pro Compe gold 14-28 which I believe matches the original freewheel that Miyata spec'd for the this bike. I found it at Citizen Chain here: https://www.pedalr.com/items/712. I think it's the fourth time I've replaced the freewheel.

I'm also looking for some SunTour barcons which I think would be nice for an old touring bike like this. I picked up a NOS SunTour cable stop on EBay today and hope to find some decent barcons soon.

Unfortunately I lost the factory rack when I got divorced 10 years ago. I left it in the house and have no idea where it went. Probably got thrown out. If anyone knows of one that they want to sell I'd be very interested.

I hope nobody minds a reprise of what seems to be Miyata Central. Thought about posting a new thread, but reprisal won my mental coin toss.

I`m seriously considering throwing out an offer for a mid 80s 710 frameset, which isn`t exactly what I was looking for, but I think it`s fairly close. Does anybody care to offer an idea what kind of handling characteristics I might expect? Apparently it`s a racing model, but hopefully not crit quick. Think it would be a bit too lively for a rider prone to daydreaming?

As a side note, this bike has that funky aero mounting for the DT shifters. Since I`d rather use bar end shifters, I`d like to avoid screwing the shifter boss mounted housing stops to the bolted on bosses behind the TT. I saw pictures somewhere of a nice little adaptor thingy that looks like it screws on there and then had the housing stops (or maybe bosses to mount the stops to?) on each side of the tube, in the "normal" position. Are those readily available?

I'd put the 710 closer to the sport tourer end of the line. It has slacker angles, generous clearances for fenders, and eyelets on the rear drop-outs and fork. And stable road manners. I built this '81 (painted like an '84 'cause those were the decals available) up as a faux rando bike and put some serious mileage on it over the past several years. i like it a lot.
