Got this off CL for $175. Univega Gran Premio. Any ideas on the year? Its a little tall for me, but I couldn't pass it up! I'll probably end up selling it soon...

Whats up with the plastic?

early 80's. I had a buddy that raced on one of those, same color.

nice find! back in the day those weren't anything special, but by today's standards the workmanship is nice to see.

Post the serial number and pics in the Classic & Vintage forum, try to get the attention of forumite T-Mar. He's the pro on dating Univegas or Miyatas (I believe your frame was made by Miyata).

Nice bike

Wow, for a second I thought this would be a thread about romantic bicycle relationships.

This is a bike you should part out as you have some desireable components much older than the frame.

Yep, part out time. The frame has taken a header. Hopefully you can get your money's worth out of the components. In before kurt.

Based on what? The frame looks straight to me and the fork looks correct. I wouldn't trash a frame just because there's paint peel on one lug. Also, I'd sell it as is. If there's a couple of valuable components on there, maybe they can be replaced and sold separately, but I don't see a Suntour AR derailer selling for big bucks.

Quote: i used to sell univega back then and the gran premio was one of our most popular models. this one is quite the eclectic hodgepodge of components which date from over a very broad timeframe with very little of the original build still intact(d/c brake calipers, saddle, post & f&r derailleurs). just looking at the frame details, paint scheme & graphics, i'm thinking this example was produced around 82/83
Agreed, almost nothing is OEM and early 1980's is correct, but I'd push it back at a year. I'm pretty dure it's not a 1983. The serial number will tell us for sure.

Initially, I thought the frame was bent too. The impression comes from the proximity of the front wheel to the down tube. It's much closer than normal. However, I suspect these may not be the original wheels, which would contribute to the illusion. The rear wheel is quite close to the seat tube, despite being pushed all the way back in the dropouts. It looks like 27" has been substituted for 700C. Yet, the pads appear relatively centrered in the ears of the calipers.

It looks like there may be bends in the tubes behind the head lugs, but maybe not. There doesn't appear to be any cracking of the paint immediately behind the lugs and typically the bend would not occur at the lug itself. It's a hard call.

Ok, this makes me feel ALOT better about parting it out. The wheels are still 27".

Thanks for the input guys. I'm thinking ebay for the smaller parts, CL for the frame/wheels?
