Question about an EBay Derailleur purchase
 

I just bought a Suntour Cyclone MK II rear dérailleur to go on my Pug UE 18. The item looks nice but he did not include the nut that holds the screw that attaches the dérailleur to the dérailleur hanger. Does that make sense? I just wrote the seller a note inquiring about that nut. Shouldn't it have been included? Not a derailleur hanger, but the nut that attaches to the screw that holds it onto a hanger. That is what I think I am owed, that nut.

I have never bought a used derailleur so I'm wanting to make sure my expectations are in line with reality. Without that nut you cannot attach it to anything.

a bike shop, unless he's meen spirited will have a bolt. They don't come with'em. It's not at all nervy of you to ask at the shop, he can perhaps answer a question or show you an example as well. You can return with a cup of coffee, he'll think he's gotten the better end of the deal .

Generally the derailleur is fastened to the hanger solely with the bolt. I have seen the extra nut that you are wondering about on a few odd frames, mostly lower end stuff. In defense of the seller, every derailleur I've bought or sold had only the single bolt so I wouldn't slam them. Unless a superfluous nut is one of those weird French things that I am ignorant of, my advice is to put a drop of thread lock on the fixing bolt, mount it up, and ride that thing!

The only derailers that I know of that use a nut are Simplex. If you bought a Suntour derailer and you have a Simplex dropout that is unthreaded and uses a a nut to hold the derailer, it's not going to work.

A) Thanks for setting me straight on the EBay purchase. It came as described and it looks very nice so I'm pleased with the purchase and purchaser, and now I am informed.
B) The Pug does in fact have a what I guess is a Simplex hanger that does not work with the Suntour so my next task is to find the missing link. Will my LBS have something like that is it an EBay kind of thing?

Take your new to you RD up to RBM and ask for Jack at the service dept counter and explain your situation. He will go to his magic work bench at the back wall with all the little plastic drawers on it and your issue will be resolved.

Since you have apug with an integrated hanger, you must have a mid to high end bike. Early PAs, PRs and PXs have a hanger that is designed to accept only Simplex derailers.

You have three choices:

1. Sell the Suntour and buy a Simplex derailer that fits your hanger. The SX610 and SLJ6600 drop parallelogram models shift the best. The SLJ will be very expensive. The SX will just be expensive.

2. Modify your hanger to accept the Sintour. I did that to my PX10. I wish I hadn't.

3. Cut off your hanger and mount the Suntour with a bolt on mounting claw. Resist the temptation to do that!

+1 Suntours didn't use a backing nut.

+1 Go to your favorite bike shop, they will sort it out for you.

+1 Keep the grinder/drill/saw away from the bike!!

I wouldn't trust any bike shop to sort out a problem with a French bike. Very few mechanics know anything about them anymore.

So should I be looking for a specific hanger or?

edit - I am adding a photo of a Suntour that is on EBay right now. It looks like that one comes with a hanger (in the bag) (the big photo with the box is the one on EBay right now)

can you use a claw on a bike with cast lugs and an integrated hanger like that?

Using a Claw on a bike with an integral hangar may work, Campagnolo parts will not, the claw offsets. The claw will have to have the bolt hole for mounting the attachment at the same point, as the mounting bolt extends a bit beyond the claw, and I don't think the threaded bolt will pass through the Simplex hole.

In this case I would search out the recommended Simplex parts, or tap and file as another post has shown.
If its a PX, then I would not, a PR, well its not that a big deal.

I wasted alot of time and effort giving you an explanation you don't need. It's my own fault for jumping to the conclusion that you had an integral hanger. Maybe somebody else can use the information. It comes from over 30 years of messing with French bikes

You don't have a problem. You should be able to get a hanger claw from any bike shop. If they don't have it, they can order it. It shouldn't cost more than $5. The one you have is for Simplex only.
