my "new" 1984 Schwinn Tempo.

ive been looking for a clean original bike for a while. i was about to pick up a clean Schwinn super le tour for a city bike the other day when i found out an acquaintance of mine used to collect bikes. he has 70+ vintage bikes from the 30s to late 80s. anyway i mentioned on another forum i was looking for old road bikes to convert to fixies and he mentioned a black tall frame schwinn that was mint. he didnt know what it was.
turns out its a 25" 1984 tempo. it was a bike shop floor model that never was sold, it has less that 10 miles on it and is completely mint besides dust and so on from sitting, the cables are a bit sticky and the brake pads are dry rotted but other than a couple small scratches its mint and 100% original. its basically brand new. i paid 150 for it. 50 dollars less than the asking price of the super le tour, and he even delivered it to me haha. the bike rides like a new bike and fits pretty well, im 6'6'' 260 so its tough to find something that fits well. im putting on some decent 700c wheels so i dont mess up the orignals and putting some egg beaters on it, other than that im leaving it alone. it will be my daily commuter. i just took some pics but they turned out super dark. ill try and get some new ones tommorow in daylight. awesome, i was a bit worried i may have overpaid a bit. but its good bike. id like to get a more modern wheel on it but not sure what i can use in the back.

You have lots of options, including upgrading to 700c (622mm Bead Seat Diameter) alloy rims, spreading the rear dropouts to accommodate freehub cassettes with more cogs, etc. Changing to 700c rims would mean that your existing brake calipers may not have enough reach to adjust to the 4mm smaller wheel rim radius, so before deciding to use 700c rims you should measure the caliper slots in your front and rear brakes to see if you can move the pads four millimeters closer to the wheel hubs. At your weight, I'd go with 36 spoke wheels and sturdy rims, whatever you decide to do. Good luck with your new bike. |
i had wanted to use a set of 06 gipiemme t-tre 30s as theres a killer deal on a pair with with tires locally, but i dont know how the rear cog would work. any idea?
as far the brakes, TONS of room. ill have no problem with the 700c wheels. |
