Frame ID-Cool Copper-like finish

This frame and fork came into the Boise Bike Project. Just finished building it up yesterday. The Copper finish looks real, but obviously not. The frame is made from something better than gas pipe. No markings on the drop outs.

Any ideas? The lock is coming off as soon as the bolt cutters are found.

I don't know, but the pictures reminded me of the bike in this thread. It's not the same frame, but both fork crown and lugs are strikingly similar.

If the copper finish looks real, it might be real copper plating (if you are sure it is not just copper paint).

I once almost had this done to a bike of mine in the 70s.

An expert on plating I am not (I am sure one will chime in with more accurate info), but when a frame is chrome plated, one of the underlying layers is copper plating. If the plating process is ended after the copper plating step, the frame might look like yours.

The more I look at the photo, it looks like copper-colored paint.

If I was force to guess the brand I would say Steyr. Don't know why but that is my guess. Maybe the Japanese parts were added later.

Yes, I think rhm has nailed it as a PuchSteyrAustroDaimler product, maybe a Clubman model, maybe a notch above...looks like it even had the BB oiler fitting at one time, you might plug that hole in the shell with something to keep the rain and dirt out.

Thanks for the replies. The PuchSteyrAustroDaimler branding looks correct. The Japanese parts were put on at the Bike Project(coop). It came in as a frame/fork and bb only.

The copper looks more like plating than paint. There used to be bands for cables on the TT and the finish is darker in those areas. I would think it would look bright and shiny if the finish is paint.

My Puch Bergmeister was copper painted under translucent red paint. My parents bought it for me in about 1960. I'm at work and can't see the picture.

It looks like the frame builder got his materials in the plumbing section of the local hardware.
I like it!

Now that I can see the picture, I think it's a Puch Bergmeister. Pictures of them have been posted on this site in the past, but never a candy apple red one with copper plating as the base that I had. There was also a candy blue one. It was not a high end bike, but it had the most beautiful paint job I had ever seen. I think that someone removed the top coat with stripper. It would have no effect on the copper. Mine came from John's in Pasadena, CA. They also sold Steyr Clubmans and Capos.

German for "king of the mountain."

PM me if you restore this bike. I may have a headbadge for you.

I saw a Czech make "Favorit" that looked similar to that one.

Dirtdrop Now that I can see the picture, I think it's a Puch Bergmeister.

Hi,

I did not post the message with the Bergmeister but I have the same model and need a headbadge. Please let me know if the original poster of this message does not respond for the headbadge.

Thank You,

Yes, frame looks like a Steyr Clubman.

BTW, while riding once near Santa Cruz in the early 70s, we stopped in a bike shop that had a copper plated Harry Quinn frame for sale. One of the most gorgeous frames I had ever seen; don't know how it help up though. A friend from college was impressed and had his Motobecane Grand Record brass plated. Looked great when it was all polished up but rapidly turned ugly.

The Steyer Clubman did not have the brake cable routed through the top tube. The Bergmeister did. That's its most distictive feature. I've never seen fittings like they used at the entry and exit points on another bike. There were little chrome or polished aluminum covers for those fittings. The Clubman had full length housings held by those cheap snap on clips. The Clubman was a worthy competitor for the Schwinn Varsity. It was not offered with the copper plating.
