New Guerciotti steel...what do you guys think?

I'm considering picking one up. I really don't need another frame. As far as Guerciottis...I have a PRX built up, an NOS TSX frame and two '83 SL frames (used). So, either talk me into it or out of it.

That's a great price for a new frame. I would like to see some close ups of the details.

looks sweet! I only wish it came in bigger sizes :(

Gearbasher, my Peugeot competition 500 is also Columbus Thron.

Thron is fairly low on the Columbus pecking order, it's a basic cro-mo tube. I am upgrading my frame to a carbon fork this week (it's in the shop now, and I pick it up thursday). Thron is not as light as, say, SLx, Ultra Foco or Genius. This may or may not be relevant to you...

The current Guerciotti steel bike, the Pirana, is made from Dedacciai tubing, and costs considerably more than $500... I can also give the factory /showroom a ring for you as I am in Milano at the moment, if you have any specific doubts or questions I can see if i can put them to Alessandro Guerciotti or one of his team.

Hope this helps.
Simon

Looks like a nice frame, and good price, if it suites your needs. Looks like that frame uses Thorn OS tubes. Thorn is butted .9/.6 which is the same as SL of old only SL used STD diameter tubes and Thorn is OS. OS tubes with the same thickness of STD tubes will make for a very firm ride. For comparison purposes, ELOS tubing used OS tubes with .7/.4 butts. Thorn is great for a touring rig, or for a heavyweight rider, but for a person of more normal proportions the frame will be a very firm ride.

Gorgeous frame but I cannot find any pictures of the fork that comes with it.

Here's a link to a photo of the frame with fork:

Hrm, I am not sure, it seems kind of a lot of money but I guess the craftsmanship will be very high...right? I'd like to see one built up to judge, the fork isn't all that interesting to me.

So, we now have Ciocc and Guerciotti re-making their classic steel frames and Colnago still makes some great steel bikes, who else is going to get on board?

And has any company started to use the re-issue of Columbus SL yet? That would probably be worth paying for...

I think a lot of C&V guys are coming into the market looking for steel frames that they are familiar with during their younger (more exciting?) days in cycling. Many are now older/affluent enough to spend for the fancier steel bikes that they could only dream about back then and the old makers ar making their dreams come true. This renaissance of steel bikes and framesets is a great retort to the newest "hyper-tech" CF bike movement that pretty much attracts cyclist that are mostly outside of the steel picture/generation and sort of "don't get it".

Prices seem worth it to me if you want a good new frameset, a good vintage used frameset by one of those marquees in good shape could run you 200-300$, and having a steel frame built for you by either someone known or unknown will put the figures right up in the high $2-3000.00$ figure stratosphere, so in comparison seems like a bargain.

Yep, I got into C&V because the new stuff is uber-expensive and because I can now buy the very bikes that I dreamed of for next to nothing. My Battaglin is outfitted with top of the line stuff that cost me a pittance compared to the new top of the line stuff and it works just as well.

Wow! This really got my attention. I really wanted a Guerciotti SLX back in 1985-i got a Basso Gap instead because it was much cheaper(SL/SP,though).
That's certainally a cheap price, but it's also a much lower quality tubing than I've ever considered. The fork crown is also very unattractive.
But still,it's a very pretty frame....

when i ride,i still like to ride fairly hard, though, and wonder if I'd be disappointed by the ride.

Interesting. Is this subbed out somewhere? Not on the Guerciotti site. I can only find it at two locations on the net and one made it seem like they uncovered a lost crate in the warehouse where the ark of the covenant is kept. Rather dull take on the pre-83 graphics. SL tubing and a chromed fork would have been nice.
