Not Another Brake Hood Thread!
 

Finally getting around to cleaning up this old bucket of hex bolts and will eventually need some hoods for these Suntour Superbe non-aero levers.

But, I've been down this road before. The Cane Creeks that were supposed to fit were too large around the barrel. I ended up putting them on a set of 600EX levers and had the same problem. I ended up with a foam rubber shim to take up some of the extra space. But they're still a little short around the skirt. It seems to me that what would fit for one, would fit for the other.

Any recommendations for Suntour non-aero hoods would be appreciated.

Those are the Euro-Asia hoods, and though I haven't tried them on Superbe levers, they fit Modolo and Campagnolo levers very well. They are NOT the same size/shape as the Cane Creek.

I'm trying to find some hoods for some Modolo brakes.

Anyone know where to source some Ame Modolo hoods (white, black, yellow) or Modolo hoods?

This Modolo brake was obviously marketed by Modolo, but also Mavic, Scott etc. I think it went by a bunch of names Professional (Modolo).

Dia Compe hoods will fit Modolo Speedy brake-levers. Not like a glove (Modolo's are weird), but tolerably so.

I bought a set of NOS Modolo contoured hood off of the 'bay for ~$40 shipped. Superbe/Campy/Modolo all fit the same hoods. They seem expensive at $40~$60 these days but Campy hoods weren't cheap back in 1980, Modolos were a little cheaper and felt cool. Those cheap Asian hoods look like crap, I'd spring for something nicer if I was riding the bike.

I put AME hoods on my Superbe levers a couple of years ago and they worked out very well, but Yellow Jersey sold out a long time ago and still don't have any.

Superbe levers were almost exact copies of Campy Record levers, and any hoods designed for Record levers will work fine on Superbe levers. I've used A'me, Modolo, and Campy hoods on mine without problems.

Those Dia-Compes look just like the Cane Creeks I have pictured in the second photo. They are too big. I thought I read that Dia-Compe and Cane Creek are the same company now. Can anyone confirm?

That is my understanding.

OK, maybe I'm crazy too, (OK you got me there... I AM!) But I get a little freaked out spending $40 -60 for a piece of rubber. That's about what I'd spend on a derailleur... that actually affects how the bike works. Why are they so HIGH? Supply and demand, or are we all morons for spending that kinda jack on a piece of "fluff"?

Ride on the hoods for 50+ miles, and report back:thumb:

They fit nicely on Mafac levers, used to do that before I got a set of Campys. Mafac levers with Weinmann gum hoods (same as Dia-Compe) and Weinmann 500 sidepulls, ghetto brakes before Superbe's came out.

S&D and the fact they are consumables. I am surprised the OEM don't offer replacements as a revenue stream! Looks like a hole that some enterprising person could fill given the amount of demand.

I've found Modolo and Superbe hoods on ebay for anywhere from $20 up. I haven't paid
$40 for hoods, but would consider doing so for some campy gum world brake hoods.

Very good of you, esp since the going rate for NOS Campy hoods is closer to $80~$10...I wonder why the OEMs don't sell them?

I paid $55 or so not to long ago for OE Campy hoods. Why dont the OEM's make them? Its not worth their time or effort.

What is the difference between Aero and non aero brakes? I have an 82 Team Fuji that needs new hoods. Would the hoods shown here work?

Marty, just get the repops from the guy on CR. They are pretty god.

Your 82 Fuji has non-aero if it's orignal, which means the cable comes out the top. Later in the 80's some started feeding the cable down the barrel and along the bars and because this made the bike soooo much faster, they called it AERO.:)

That explains why the bike isn't riding as fast as I hoped...
