Frame Pump for Raleigh Sports

I had an unusual problem today--I was riding on the Cannon Valley Trail with my wife and daughter, and the wire bead on my tire started to come off the rim. The tube was still fully inflated, so I couldn't get the tire seated properly, so I had to let the air out, reseat it, then try to pump it up with my old frame pump.

After about 20 minutes, the pump was getting hot, the tire was still flat, so my wife rode back to the car and retrieved the floor pump that I had (fortunately) brought with us. We were back on the trail shortly, but we didn't go as far as we would have liked. While the old pump looks good, it doesn't work. I want to get a good frame pump--I commute on this bike. I have 2 questions:
  • Why would the tire start coming off the rim? My daughter was in a baby seat, so I had about 40 extra pounds on the bike.
  • What frame pump will fit the pump pegs on a Raleigh Sports? I have schrader valves on my tubes.

I commute on this bike, so I'm more concerned with how it works compared to how it looks. I tried search on this forum, and I couldn't find anything listed that seemed to work with schraders.

I would fix the one you got. There's probably a cork insert inside that could do with a healthy dollop of grease. That'll get you back your pressure. Unscrew it and see what gives. At the worse, whatever you find in there, you can fabricate a new one with an exacto blade and a trip to a good hardware store's plumbing department.

Beware new reproduction pumps - they are around fro cheap, like maybe $10, but the chrome rusts within a month or two.

The tire would come off the rim becasue either you had them filled up too much, or they are crappy tires. Are thy Schwalbes? I had Schwalbes that deteriorated within months of purchase. The lip that held the tires on crumbled and the tire blew off the rim. Several tires did that.

The tire could also come off the rim if it's not seated properly. At about ten pounds pressure, squeeze the tire and scrunch it down all around to make sure it grabs the rim lip, if there is one, and to make sure the tube is not caught between teh tire and rim.

Yellow Jersey sells replacement pumps. I have no idea of the quality. I have the one that came on my '72 Raleigh Superbe it sort of functions (yes I oiled the leathers) I usually keep a Topeak Morph in the saddle bag.

As far as the tires are concerned, what brand of tire do you have on there? Some of the less expensive brands can be off a bit on the sizing.

It certainly doesn't mesh with the looks of an old Sports, but it is the best frame pump I have ever encountered. I have been highly impressed with it.

I bought some NOS aluminum bodied Zefals on ebay recently; $10. each because no one else bid. Totally similar to what a English bike would have.

As far as tire coming off rim, probably the incompatability of modern tires with older rims. A couple of my bikes give me that grief, I watch them carefully!

I bought a silver one from Oldroads/Menotomy Vintage several years ago. It's a nice pump and I ended up setting it up with chrome framepump clamps. Then I bought a second one for my DL-1 (which has the pump bosses) and it fit those well enough.
