I hope it won't appear that I'm fishing for ideas around here... but there are two 'acorn' related strips coming up that were already in the hopper before a couple folks mentioned their presence this Fall on this thread...

I guess they fall from oaks every five years in the Cleveland area. Is this a nationwide occurence? The last time trees had them was in the Fall of 2004. I'm always worried they'll puncture my tires.

Yeah, we're having a mast year in New Jersey as well. It's not my field, but I sometimes hang out with people who talk about this kind of stuff, so I've learned a thing or two listening to them.

It's a response to a squirrels. If trees made the same amount of seed every year, the squirrel population would expand to eat them all. So it makes sense for the trees to starve the squirrels most years, thereby keeping the population low, and every now and then surprise them more than they can possibly eat.

The part that blows my mind, though, is that this trick only works if the trees can manage coordinate the mast year, coast to coast. And they do!

And they have blue blood, too.

In the winter, is it safer to ride across the lakes? We visited Sweden (Kongsur) for the first time this August for a family wedding. Beautiful country and really warm, wonderful, friendly people. They told us it is safer to drive the 150km to Stockholm across the frozen ice than to risk the road! Is this true, or would this have been them teasing to have a little harmless fun at our expense?
