In serious need of a 27" wheelset:

I've been on the prowl for one of these for a bike I'm building at cost-of-parts for a friend. (A rather pretty KHS Turbo with world champion stripes, at that)

I've gotten everything for it now except wheels. And I can't seem to get any.

Craigslist is a giant fail. I posted several "WTB: 27" Alloy Wheelset" posts, but got ZERO replies ina month.

I can't justify spending the $100 for a wheelset.

Any suggestions? Help?

Anyone here have a set I could snag for shipping and some parts or... something?

27" Wheelset, Alloy, QR hubs. 5/6 spd freewheel included would be sweet, if not I'll live.

Either way... Let me know if you have either suggestions on where to get 'em, or a set.

Don't kill me for posting this thread.

Thanks.

That's rich!

I totaled the cost of the 27" wheels I built for the Merlin....

ran me about $800, but includes tires & freewheel.

Call me, I have a few 27" cheapy options for you.
Save on shipping by coming and picking them up in person.

You might be able to convince me to sell the wheels off my bike, but first tell me why you can't use 700c wheels. They should be just as good.

27" wheels have a ride that I find much more pleasant, and the bike I'm building was made for 27"s. No problems with brake clearance and all that stuff too.

Actually, I really like 27" tires much more in general. They're fantastic.

Wow...

I know wheels can definitely get costly, Dr. D, but these ones are for a budget build for a girl who's trying to escape the chains of an automobile. I'm seeing what I can snag for her for, as you say, "cheapy."

And as for stopping by in person, I hope to tour the Pacific coast soon, not gonna be winter but maybe spring? And I'll run in when I tour, at the latest. I've still got that GIOS lined up...

You should look for a swap, If you weren't so far from sunny Tx, I'd be up for it.

Here's a set of 27" wheels with a bike attached, not sure if they're alloy nor quick-released though.

Take the Dr. up on his offer, bring along some juice or beverage to quench the search thirst.

If you come pick them up, they're free!

If you skip the Q/R requirement you'll find a lot more in the way of cheapness. a set of Q/R skewers might be worth as much as you'd care to spend on the whole wheel.

Best bet is to just post a "WTB" ad in the bicycle section of your local C/L.

I too love my 27's but to say that a 700c can't ride as nicely is just plain wrong.

I am always looking for really nice 27 inch rims.. Araya red labels are my favourite.

There is nothing 27" specific about a wheelset but the rims and spokes. You can use any hubs.

Velocity makes an asymmetric 27" (630bsd) rim. Otherwise try eBay for 27" rims.

I loved the Super Champion box section rims from the 1970's. Had a pair of those, and they were very true and stayed that way.

Right now, my 27" wheels have Ukai rims, perhaps OEM equipment from a Fuji, though I bought the rims new. Not as nice, but they've held up OK since about 1985.

Super Champion rims are excellent... I picked up a 700c version that was laced to an Sa 3 speed that I am going to use for a little project here.

Yeah, then Wolber bought it but didn't change the products. What ever happened to that company?

Honestly, Mavic were even better. We were big Italian afficianados in one shop I worked at, but we found that French made rims were the best. I'm talking about the early 80's.

Call some bike shops, two wrecks that they may routinely toss-out could yeild two or more good wheels. They're all compatible.

I build 27 inch wheels for the bikes I sell. Tough to build them for less the $25, and often it is closer
to $30. Spokes and nipples: about $7 hub $5. rim:$15-$18. I rarely seem good deals on alloy
wheels here in Boston on CL, although I think you could get something for $25-$30.
