Melton and Faggin

I am working on two -new to me- bicycles one made by Mike Melton and the
other has 'Faggin' inscribed all over it and Fitzpatrick across the down tube.
I am excited to find any information about any of these gents. I would also like to know how
I can determine the date when they were made.

Thanks a bundle!

Hi Zamboney! Check out threads "1976 Melton Touring Bike" and "1978 Melton Club Racer", both older threads in this Vintage forum (page 2 or 3 by now), for the information I've found on other Melton frames. I have a 27" frame he made for me in 1976 (pictured in the first thread above) and am trying to find out more about others with Melton frames. Have onoy found 5 or so. I've set up a database to track them. If you don't mind, please e-mail me with information on your frame, pictures, dates, where you purchased it, etc..
How did you come by it and how is it equiped? I'm currently restoring mine and am in touch with a couple of folks who have lines on replacement decals, etc.. Mike stamped the date on the bottom of the bottom bracket as a serial number. Is yours stamped? Some are not. Contact me at imapls@earthlink.net
Mike left Columbia, SC, and went on to work with Huffy and Raleigh ot design the '84 Olympic track bikes. He built some exceptional tandem frames for a while, and did some research with the first composite (graphite) frames. Otherwise, he's dropped out fo sight. I searched Google for "Mike Melton frame" and found a limited bit of info.
Let's see some pics!!

Read your thread of Melton bikes. I have been riding a Melton for a while now and was wondering where I could find new decals. From what I gather from the forum discussions the bicycle designer is no longer making them.
My frame is in need of new paint. I have read the comments of chip repair and clear coat which worked for quite a few years for me.
The frame (58 crank to TT) I have is oval steel tubing that is tapered and neither weld lines nor lugs are visible no serial number visable. The cables are routed thru the frame. Traditional red paint and the decals are similar to the huge frame seen on one of the forum pictures. The wheels I believe are the original 27 inch on quality hubs of unknown manufacture. Campy brakes/ crank/ rear derailer, and Dura-ace front derailer and 6 spd friction levers. I have no photo's at this time. Maybe some of you folks can help determine the year made. It rides very nicely and when encountering a rolling hill area and is very responsive. I have been using the Mobile 1 syn grease for quite a few years now and change out the ball bearings every 2nd year on all my road bikes, quite happy with the performance even on winter rides of 20 degrees. However, on the bearing cups the dust seal rubber has deteriorated do you know of replacements.

Your help is appriciated if you can
Steveko

Years ago, like 20, I worked in a shop in Nevada that carried Faggin frames. I bought one for myself with nice black paint with yellow decals, chrome fork and stays. Seems like it wasn't SL or SP, but a lower flavor of Columbus tubing. It looked very nice, but was rather heavy, as I recall, and rode like a brick. I built it up with a mixture of Modolo and Campy NR parts. Sold it a year or so later for quite a bit more than I paid for it. Sometimes looking good makes a difference...
