Shimano 600 Rear Hub Question
I want to replace the freewheel/cassette on my Shimano 600 hub. The problem is, I don't know what it is. It's not like the threaded freewheels that I'm used to working with, but it's not like a modern cassette either. I'm trying to upgrade to something modern to make shifting easier and preserve the original parts. Here's my hub:

That looks like one of the models where the outer cog is threaded and is effectively the lock ring for the rest of the cassette. I think you need 2 chain whips to disassemble it.

I know how to take it off, but can I put anything on other than the same cogs in different tooth counts?

Probably. I have one hub like that. I simply removed the 6 speed freehub ( I think it takes a 10mm hex) and replaced it with a 7 speed freehub, then added a 7 speed cassette. Worked out fine. I'm betting a Shimano 600 uses the same mounting for a 6 speed freehub as the 7 speed. It's easy to find out if you have a 7 speed freehub.

You would need either Uniglide or Hyperglide cogs. Hyperglide may need some Dremel work or filing to make them fit.
You cannot fit 7 cogs on a 6 speed, but can change the tooth count, depending on the rear derailleur you are using.
Loosescrews still sells Uniglide cogs.
Or change the freehub body, as roccobike says.

You'd have to find a new old stock uniglide cassette on ebay, or someone here might have one. They're not produced anymore. Thing is, that's just cogs, you don't get new bearings. If the bearings are an issue, its the freehub body you'd want to replace.
Not sure if you can buy a new hyperglide body to put on that hub. Folks here might know, because they deal with older stuff. Shimano is not very helpful letting you know what fits what for upgrading older stuff. The mechanics section would be a good place to put a second post, as well.
