pre-quick release nut-washer order?
 

i just changed the tires off my old schwinn (front and back) which sports the non-quick release nut situation...:rolleyes:

front seemed fine, but the rear, even after tightening seems to have a looseness going on...there is the nut that you tighten....and there is a sort of washer/spacer....does that go on the INSIDE or the outside (next to the nut)?

Outside, and it should have serrations to bite into the frame.

Are you sure the 'looseness' is not poorly adjusted cones?

thanks. well, i should have notice what came first...

but what are cones? i was wondering if there was some tension i needed to rePlace and widen the back, uh, 'fork'....:p

it was fine until i took it off and then put it on....it rode sort of fine, but shifting changed. the deviance is about 1/4 of an inch in the wheel wobble. i didn't really feel it in riding.

it's a 1990 Schwinn Caliente.

If the wheel 'wobbles' when the nuts are tight, then the cones are loose.

Cones hare what the wheel bearings ride on.

oh, did i make a mistake taking it off and simply trying to put it back on?

ok, i did discover (w/o checking out the maestro help at PTs!) that the thinner INNER nut adjusts the cones..or so i think. had to go back and forth (too tight, too loose..etc) and found the right tightness and free spin....

after a test ride, there it is again...the loose slight wobble returns ... it was at maybe 1/32 of an inch...now back to about 1/8 or more maybe...

maybe it's time to just go get that new wheelset....from this steel to aluminum. and quick release from this hell! :)

can you adjust the cones with the wheel ON the frame?

one more attempt....tired of taking this thing off and on....a recent thread from early september had a suggestion of simply making the cone nuts 'snug'....i just don't want to end up with alot of resistance....this 'Lightweight' already has plenty of resistance to gravity!
