Unknown Cinelli
Hi
last week i've got an old Cinelli to restore, i'm going to pick it up in about two weeks. The current owner has it for 36 years but got it second hand so i guess it's a bit older. He has no info about the bike regarding type or original color since it's been repainted for at least 2 times. I guess it's the Mod B type, but i'm not sure. If you look at the bosses and the lugs you would say it's the Mod B instead of the Rivieria. I got only one picture, was a bit excited when i went to look at the bike & close the deal, so i forgot to take more pic's. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_loCGujJDMV...-h/Cinelli.jpg Maybe you can help me identifying(is that a correct word??) the bike and maybe help me with some old catalogus thanks |
As far as I know, the Super Corsa and Model B were very similar: both had the Cinelli fastback seat cluster, the SC had the fully sloping fork crown and the B a flat crown. The Rivieras were completely different I've been told, in fact, not even build by Cinelli.

i thought the mod b's wheelbase is longer and had mudguard bosses
|
Het schijnt een Mod. B te zijn. Mischien kan je een foto van de onderkant van de bracket laten zien en ook nog een foto van rechts achter (waar de derailleur gemontiert is).
|
Looks like a late 50's Mod. B. The early 60's bikes did not have the "ears" on the head lugs and they had a flat Fischer crown.

I havent got more photo's yet, in a few days i will pick m up and will post more photo's..
It looks like it has a circle in the bottombracket where the downtube inserts the bottombracket. @thirst, what do you mean by ears? this bike doesn't have a flat crown, so this means it;s a late 50's? Do you guys know what the colourways for that time where and which parts are period correct? |
Koen,
If you look at the top head lug in your photo closely you can see that the lug line encircles the top of the head tube and then drops down and then comes to a point just above the top of the head badge and then swoops up and back to the underneath of the top tube. The point is what is sometimes referred to as the "ears". Later bikes don't have these "ears". Yes, I would say your bike is late 50's but I don't know exactly when they changed to smooth lugs/flat crowns. Cinelli dating is one of the "dark arts". thirst |
Thanks Thirst!! are there any sites with specific info about the mod b, like stock parts and colourways?
have been searching a lot, but didn't find much (usefull)info.. |
http://www.velo-retro.com/list.html
Velo-retro has a large selection of repro catalogs, although the earliest Cinelli catalog is a 60's one and may not have the exact info you are looking for. The Ron Kitching catalog from 1955 may be good as they were a Cinelli dealer although, again this one may just have parts and not bikes, the later 60's one does have bikes. You can email Chuck Schmidt the owner and ask him if there is a Mod. B in the early catalogs. Here is a link to the Velo-Stuff site that has a lot of great galleries, including a Cinelli Mod. B You can see that his "B" has the same lugs with "ears" as yours but it has the flat crown already. http://www.velostuf.com/1950%27sCinelliModelB.htm thirst |
Those don't look like the original parts if its 50s. Probably originally a steel cottered crank, Campagnolo Gran Sport deraillers and hubs, Ambrosio bar and stem, Universal brakes...

Here is a link to a "B" gallery with the same fork and lugs as yours. thirst |
yes, that is exact the same crown as (soon to be) mine, the velostuf one i did already know and infact it was the reason that i was confused about it being genuine or a 50's type.
will contact chuck soon, that's a really good tip thanks! |

Good looking bike. I wonder who's it is. :innocent:
Iab: Nice Bike! really love the colour!!
mine had the same front derailleur if the current owner didn't lose it.. yours is with original paint isn't it? Do you have some points to look/think at/of when i start to restore my bike? |

As for the restoration, it depends. If you want period correct, you will need to be very patient. But then again, it is just a bike, any components will work and it is a fun bike to ride. I'd get up and riding and then slowly swap out the "correct" stuff. I'm still looking for an "Italia" or "Record" saddle. Let me know if you find 2. |
I forgot to add, this seller on ebay, Alex, he sells NOS Cyclo rod derailleurs like on my bike. He hasn't been selling much lately but you can set up an email to alert you if he does.

thanks citoyen, the whole things is getting clearer now..
Het begint bijna makkelijk te klinken, zoveel vrijheid qua onderdelen.. Iab: Seen your paint, like how it looks! Think it gives the bike "karakter' (its dutch, couldn't remember the proper english version).. It;s almost an art painting that thin. I have all the time in the world to finish this bike.. i'am going to take my time to collect the right bits.. Love the searching part almost as much as the building part, and then im not even talking about riding! Will keep my eyes open for your saddles, but can you explain wich ones they are.. or a photo? Did some googling but no result.. |
