Capelli 'Record' — anybody know

Racing frame and chromed fork— ONLY. Obviously vintage. 126 mm spread in stays. Italian? Will need a repaint or powder coating, chase, align blah blah. Engraved signature at tops of stays. 'C' signature in the crown's lug forging: I found one, but seller cannot tell me what the tubing is. From looks of it it has be be decent — Columbus? Anyone know this one?

Thanks you guys ... and in reply: the seller is not in the know, and I don't think he is playing dumb.

So, I looked at Chesini as suggested by soderbiker, and it does not appear to be as rich a build as a Chesini — works of art as they are! But one or two stuffs stand out to be from the same mold of thinking, but that could just be because they were built in the same city!

Here are some pics ... and no more rez or size, including that of the head-badge, is any more descriptive than what I've got cropped and presented here.

The best face that I can put on it is this: possibly a premium maker of racers put out some lesser bikes on contract under another name. Not that they were bad bikes — just not the ones that the front ot the peleton rode on the grand tour. Trainers for amateurs and wannabes — and not to diss them in the slightest way. At a glance though, the lines say serious race bike to me. No lazy tourer. So I'm guessing Columbus something in double butt ... and maybe hand brazed in jigs.

What say you?

I wanna backup for my Renyolds 501 Trek 560!

i can tell you capelli means hair. that doesn't help identify the bike. but it is a little weird that your bike is named hair.

The name rings a bell but I can't place where I heard it. Check inside the bottom of the fork's steerer tube for the five helical ridges indicative of Columbus.

I can't help you with your question, but from the pictures, this frame does not seem to need to be repainted.

I forgot about that — good point, but this is a long distance thing in basically two languages. I guess another message the owner, but we are on different languages.

You may be right. If I re-enamelled the entire BB casting in a close match, then rubbed out the orginal with 1000 wet/dry — and get a pro to spray with a 2-pack clear coat, it might look fantastic. We'll see. I may just spring for the deal and see what turns up.

Just found out — Columbus SL — triangle anyway!

I've heard of the brand but can't locate any details right now...it's definitely not too shabby, looks like good workmanship. CitoyenduMonde would probably know all about it, even down to the last-known address of the builder's children ;)...but all I can say is the details look like the work of a very small-output builder who cared about the details.
The BB shell may be sand-cast, maybe Georg Fisher or Emillio Bozzi (hope I spelled any of those names correctly!)
my advice is: buy it.

Thanks for confirming my impression (see above). The situation now boils down to price. And I'm not going to put you guys down to estimating that. Anyway, having done it already, I know that there are bus-loads of factors when building on a frame up. Sometimes you get lucky. Sometimes you don't. IMHO, many projects can turn out great, but like classic audio, cars cameras etc — don't dare count up the cost .... of course ... unless you get lucky. I've got some parts stacked up, but you knows if they really fit!? Part of the fun? — as long as Mrs Wife holds fast as the bills come in:twitchy:

Hi, I know this is a pretty old post but did you ever manage to find out any more about the Capelli?

I've just bought one myself and am keen to find out more

Cheers,
Rob
