My latest Paramount
 

I bought a 1978 Paramount today that was on my local CL. Serial no.is C7809 and it's in OK condition with one dent in the top tube. Anyway, while examining it I noticed that the Campy RD and cranks are dated 1974 and the FD lacks the CPSC lip. Since the seller was the original owner, having bought this Paramount new in Chicago I am assuming the bike shop( Wastyns, I believe) must have used older components for whatever reason. I also noticed that this Paramount has the overdrilled (extra spoke holes) Campy Record hubs. Anyway here's a few pics. Any thoughts/comments?

John, congtrats on the nice find!!! I appears to be in relatively good condition.

Open up the axles and chech the lock nut date codes, the FD amy have a code as well. I think it safe to assume they used an older group for the build. Aside from the CPSC changes the group went essentialy unchanged during this time period .

Interesting lightning holes on the Campag high-flange hubs. I've seen multiple Paramounts with them (both track and rtoad), but it seems to be a Schwinn-specific detail. I never did figure out the significance behind it either.

I acquired a set of those hubs with a highly deteriorated 76 Paramount that I parted out. They now reside on my 72 chrome P15 that uses a more modern drive train, along with the odd slightly curved skewers that were not of the CPSC variety.

If the extra holes + the original 36 added up to 40 per hub, we might assume these were left over from the Tandems. But I believe I count an extra 18 holes per hub, per side! This would give a spoke count of 72 for the entire wheel!

Any opinions on whether this weakens the edge of the flange of the hub? It certainly looks as if it would to me. Interesting that we have both a front and a rear example.

I must have been asleep at the wheel to miss that on CL. I spend just a few moments per day looking there..;)

Kurt, I agree with your assessment of the "drillium hubs'. In today's lawyer-laden society they would end up in the scrap barrel. Fortunately I have lots of 700 wheelsets.

Jim, the locknuts are stamped 'CAM 73'.

Finally, any recommendations for 700c tires?

Nice find! My dream is to get a cherry Paramount from an original owner someday! Not to jack the thread, but in what year did the Paramounts come with indexed Campy DT shifting? Or did they? I know some of the newer ones came with Shimano equip.

As to the hubs, mine are also dated 73. I have found on various Paramounts that have come in and out of my fleet that Schwinn must have purchased huge quantities of Campy parts. On a 74 P 15 that my wife used to ride, the Campy triple crank set did not have a date code on it, making it earlier than 1973. I believe the left crank did. I don't think Schwinn (or anyone else) cared a whole lot about those date codes back in the day.

I have ridden that Paramount with those hubs down Hill Street in Pt. Loma at speeds approaching 40 mph with no ill effects, at least so far. I know the hubs are pretty high mileage based on the bike they came off of. I rebuilt the wheels with Super Champion clincher rims, presently running Panaracer Pasela tires.

my bianchi track bike has the schwinn drilliumed hubs, they were originally on a '73 paramount track bike:

so far they have held up fine, after many miles.

My '70 Paramount P13 came with its original Nuovo drivetrain - the RD is an undated variant reading only "PATENT." It's anywhere from '68-69. Original hubs were long gone. Serial E7009.

The '72 P13 has a '70 NR RD on it...and curiously enough, a January 1973 small-rivet Professional on it. I'm not entirely convinced the saddle is original though - the frame is C72158.

The '61 P12 only has its original front hub to date it by (no date on the Campag Gran Sport RD, obviously) - hub is from 1960.
