Neighbor asked me to clean up her bike... (photos)
Super nice Schwinn World Tourist - although the catalogs on-line seem to indicate it should be a Collegiate. Bike is surprisingly light despite having an all steel crank, steel rims, and steel hubs. Derusted it using oxalic acid, repacked all the bearings (other than the Shimano 3 speed rear hub which I'm not familiar with), threw on some new tires and brake shoes, and the thing rides like a Cadillac. Sorry to see it leave the garage.

Small sticker by the dropout says GIANT, and the another sticker on the seat tube says "Made in Taiwan". Anyone know if Giant was a contract builder for Schwinn in the mid '80's?

Yes, they were, and it was part of the demise of Schwinn, the first time.

Those brake pads are new? I was just going to suggest some Kool Stop salmons. I'm also curious about the before photos.

Sorry, forgot the before photos, other than the before new brake pad photos which you all can see. All the chrome had a light surface coat of rust. I'm really impressed with the oxalic acid sauce, it was my first time using it but not the last. Neighbor is about 70 years old, you still want photos?

more late 1970s to early 1980s, part of schwinn's demise and Giant's success was that schwinn broke agreements with giant and sought out cheeper bikes from china bicycles company, so Giant decided it was time to take over north america, now they are the largest manufacture of bicycles in the world, producing over 50% of ALL bicycles built today.

Wait, how did you work with the acid? Did you dismantle and soak the parts, or did you dip a tooth brush into the acid and then go to town? I have some rusty rims...

Dismantle and soak the parts. Front wheel went in 1/2 at a time and rear took about three turns since I didn't want to submerge the geared hub. Worked really well on everything but the spokes - hit those with a scotchbrite pad since they are pretty rough looking.

If you look at the driveside rear dropout, there should be "GMMYY" stamped into the frame. This indicates the framewas built by Giant (Taiwan) and the MM is the month, YY the year of production. Most of the eighties Giant built Schwinn frames have this date code.
