KHS - True Temper?
 

I picked up a KHS Sport Aero last night off of CL, frame is built of True Temper CroMo, 700c aluminum rims (that run incredibly smooth, and the rear sprockets is the quietest I have heard), LeeChi aero levers and brakes, Shimano dt shifter, with an indexed rd (Shimano RSX) and SHimano Exage 300 fd.

Anybody know much about these bikes? The geometry looks pretty good, and feels decent. Anyone know anything about the True Temper tubing used? This may be the wrong forum to ask, as I am not sure the age of this bike, though I would guess very early 90's.

Yes, it could even be a year or two later. Unless it's OX TrueTemper, it's the reg. tubing. KHS bikes were always very good value & well thought out; geom.,comps & tube selection. A year or so after yours, they had 2 models in 853, very cool.
@ 850 to 1.200 they compared favorably to brands costing 2 to 300 more; Mixed group & full ultegra respectively. I came close to buying one but the LBS was silly.

Interesting. I picked it up last night for $90. That a fairly good deal on a KHS? Granted, I am in Portland and even a rusty Varsity goes for that price.

Trying to decide if I want to keep it or through it back and wait for another. Thoughts?

I want a decent road bike, I have a Bianchi Sport, but I have outfitted it more as a townie, with porteur style front rack and what not.

Keep it. I have an 89 KHS Montana Summit, sticker on it says "Triple Butted TANGE MTB" KHS did not make a "gas pipe" steel frame bike. Even "worst case" you have at least a double butted True Temper tube set, and ain't nothing wrong with that. Bike-Pedia has info on it, if 1993 or later, including what tube set was used for the frame.

FYI: the Serial number can be broken down as such: the "U" is the factory ID. The next number is the last digit in the year it was made. The second and third numbers are the month it was made, the remaining numbers are the individual frame/consecutive number for frames made that year. (Yes, their serial numbers do repeat every ten years.)

I picked up a '97 True Temper Summit X this summer, and have been very pleased with the quality. Even with the suspension fork it weighs almost exactly the same as my Bridgestone RB-T. Now it weighs a lot more, as it became my Xtracycle. I'm considering getting a different doner, and putting the Summit back like it was, except keeping the rigid fork.

BTW, thanks for the serial number decoding. Mine is U70412901, which is the only year the X was made.
