This has got to be a mistake right?

Is there something special about this that I don't know about?

well it is 'Vintage' and 'Made in England' LOL seems way over priced to me

flammenwurfer 11-09-09 01:06 PM

I've had it in my Watch list for a few days and it was just in the $20 range a day or two ago.

rhm 11-09-09 01:07 PM

Oooo-wee, I hope not. I have one that's almost as nice, that I might put up....

USAZorro 11-09-09 01:19 PM

Looks to be in outstanding condition, but something doesn't smell right here.

due ruote 11-09-09 01:31 PM

That's substantially more than I paid for all but one of my bikes. Not that anyone asked.

flammenwurfer 11-09-09 01:36 PM

Exactly. I spent $100 on my most expensive bike. I don't see how a light set can be worth $200+.

Well, that's the whole thing about parting out a bike. My 1950 Norman Rapide set me back $100, and attached to it, as you can see in this picture, was a light similar to the one in the auction.

I would gladly have paid more than that for the bike without the light, but there was no reason to mention that to the seller. As it turns out there are quite a few things on that bike that would sell for more than I paid for it; it doesn't mean the lamp (for example) isn't worth it, but rather that I got a pretty good deal.

Must be something that's the only "correct" component for a particular restoration.

due ruote 11-09-09 01:57 PM

That Norman is super nice.

I get the parting out thing, I'm just saying you could sell that light, and maybe for a lot of money, but it wouldn't be to me. I'm more of a diamond in the rough bargain hunter, and a light would never be important enough for me to trade a nice bike for it. Clearly, others feel differently.

EjustE 11-09-09 02:47 PM

Looks like there are 2 bidders bidding against each other on this, thus the price...

flammenwurfer 11-09-09 02:53 PM

Wow, I guess some people have more money than they know what to do with. Restoration or not, there's bound to be another light set come up sooner or later.

tolfan 11-09-09 05:14 PM

WOW just plain WOW

Just the beginning...

My guess is that we are going to see more and more of this sort of thing as the interest in vintage bicycles continues to expand. Lights stick way out there and are very prone to damage. Examples in good condition are going to be few, far between and worth way too much. But then again, that could be the sixties doing another rerun.

What is so special about this set listed for auction, I do not know. What I do know is that I am going to have a look at some of the old sets I have kicking around. Knew I tucked them away for a reason:-)

There's some of that, but still, something just seems wrong here.
