Information on 80 something trek 1200

Hey gang,
A coworker of mine has an older trek 1200 he said he would sell me after we had gotten into a discussion that I was looking for older road bikes and I mainly wanted one for a commuter. He brought it in today and it don't seem to be in bad shape.

It is all RX100 components and it is a 14 speed with indexed downtube shifters. I'm not crazy about the teal and purple lettering but I would repaint it anyway.

Do you all think it would be worth $100? I don't know much about the older treks.

Here are a couple pics of the bike:

Worth $100. I wouldn't repaint it though since it'll just be more work especially when the paint is in such good condition. Make sure it fits you though.

Wow, that thing is virginal!
Why bother with a repaint?

Appearance wise, I think the only thing it needs is a black bottle cage. And if you've go the dough, black cranks.

I pretty much already bought it LOL.

Will I be able to put fenders and a rear rack on it?

It definitely seemed to fit nice, my caad7 is a 56cm but it is a racier fit. I road the trek in the parking lot and I felt a lot more relaxed and not so bent over.

I have been wanting an older road bike for a commuter and I want to put a brown brooks saddle and leather grip tape on it. I still want a lugged steel frame too.

You're going to tweedify that thing? To each his own.

I think it's a '90; the dayglow colors are OK I think and wouldn't paint it. WELL worth a hundred, way more than that. I remember 7 to 800 being the price.

What do you mean tweedify?

By putting fenders and a rack on it?

I wouldn't put the brown leather stuff on this one, I am saving that for an older vintage ride.

Hahaha, primarily ribbing ya about the saddle and bar tape choices. If they're black, it won't be too badly tweedified.

Then I will really tweedify it when I put yellow grip tape and yellow tires on it

Sweet! Yellow would be hottt!

I have to concur with oldandnew with regards to his guess at 1990 for a vintage. Its black w/green catalog description is the only one that makes since.

c. 90-'93 I think...1200 is sport geometry, should be a fun ride.
I wouldn't paint it either.

Yes, that is a fantastic deal! Fenders will be a very very tight squeeze on that one. I doubt you will be able to fit them normally. You could split them and mount them that way, sixteyfiver has a thread on how to do that.

I have a Trek 1420 that I use on club rides and I think very highly of it. Embrace the 90's color, it looks amazing! I love the loud highlighter yellow ones they sold.

I rode it around the parking lot again, I can't believe how well it fits me. The shifting is nice and crisp. It seems to transfer power pretty good also. I am anxious to get her cleaned up and tires to the right psi and take her on a 20+ miler and see how I feel then. Won't be till the weekend though.

Here are pictures showing the tight clearance between the wheels and frame. A rack will fit very well. I had a bontrager backrack on mine a while back that was pretty nice.

Here is a pic from back when it had the rack on it:

You ride a 56cm normally and that bike is comfortable? How tall are you? That frame looks at least 61cm.

Also +1 to everyone saying you got a good deal. That bike would fetch $400 easily here.

My caad7 is 56 cm and I feel kind of like I have to reach I am guessing because the bars are a little lower. The little bit that I rode the trek it seems like I am more relaxed. The sticker on the frame says 60cm.

I am 5' 11" and my real inseam is 33". When I straddle the trek I can lift the front tire off the ground about 3-4".

Yeah, you should be fine. I am the same height, with a 32" inseam and ride 60cm frames very comfortably.

I was thinking the highlight colors were purple and yellow but here they are purple and orange. I see orange grip tape and orange tires in my near future LOL.
