Eddy Merckx Super Corsa (~'85) Pricing?

Hey everybody, I'm taking my first foray out of the sub-$300 range... wondering if I could get some advice on the value of this bike:

I'm talking with a guy about buying his 1985-ish Eddy Merckx Super Corsa...

The components are all Campy Nr, except for the wheels, which are c-record-era Campy, and the levers, which are Eddy Merckx.

The paint is in decent condition and the bike should ride well.

Is $700 a fair asking price, jugding from this info?

I don't have a picture of the actual bike, but attached is a picture of a similar frame...

Sounds pretty good to me. I paid around $600 (including shipping) for a Corsa frame, so I think that is a good deal. I say go for it.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Getting a good deal w/ the campy parts... assuming everything is legit

One concern is with the frame. I've read that Merckx frames have been made everywhere and all were not created equal. This is a big purchase for me so I'm paranoid about getting ripped off... seems like $700 is at least reasonable considering the campy components, regardless of the frame

I think it's substantially better than reasonable; I think this is an excellent buy. Will it be the best deal of the century? No...but you;re pretty much never going to get that deal on a bike like this. It's more than a fair price and I'd wager it would sell for at least 3-400 over what you;re paying on ebay. If you like it...and it fits...go for it!

I'm dropping a similar amount into a De Rosa and am very excited. Maybe my view is warped, but I sold a 2006 Bianchi Pista yesterday for $450. The welds looked like crap. The components were certainly well below campy level and it barely has any components. The person buying it thought they did well, since they normally go higher around here. Think about what that bike is going to be worth in 10 years...now think about what your eddy m will be worth. Buy it.

If you don't want it, and it's 52-54CM, please help me get it!

I am not the Eddy Merckx expert, but the bikes labeled "Eddy Merckx" while he was still racing were built "all over" but the ones from the Eddy Merckx bicycle company like the one pictured are all built in Belgium at his factory. Some very early bikes from Eddy may have been built at De Rosa as Ugo was a mentor to Eddy's business.

So this is an 1985... probably doesn't fall into the racing period?

I have an 86' Eddy Merckx Corsa with a full 6 speed Dura-Ace group that I paid $700 for. The So Cal market is pretty high, but I feel like I got a good deal. Ebay prices for similar bikes was comparable. Mine is in pretty nice shape, about an 8 of 10. So I would say "buy it", but that frame doesn't look like a 62cm to me, I would have him re-check those measurements. Good luck.
