They could have fixed the "search" function. It was broken.

Software writers want to WRITE SOFTWARE, not fix the new bugs they add - that's for the Support drudges to fix.

Now we know where all the Windows Vista (and ME) software engineers went after Microsquish FIRED them. (insert new, animated, 3D Smiley Face here when working)

I think this current skin choice was a planned diversion. Soon, they'll give us back the old one, and we'll be so grateful, we won't complain about the chronic bugs that will plague the system for years to come.

I tend to agree that we shouldn't fix what isn't broken, but with the size of the forum we have here, things were getting to the point of broken. I doubt that we can get the old "skin" back as we have a completely different version of the software running now, but it is something I can bring up.

I would like to see the Forum Jump function restored, at teh bottom of every page. You know, that pick list at the bottom that listed all the subforums and their children, and allowed a direct change from any subforum to any other. That saved me a LOT of time and page-loading. On my fast Mac the page loading time is not such an issue, but on my slower one and the elderly C&V PC, it's a real problem.

Not sure if I like it either. Seemed like the old version was easier to navigate, plus I don't know why web designers make everything look like a bubble. Why cant it just be a color without the gradient?

I've ported vBulletin Skins between versions since back in the version 2.x days, it has always been doable and should still be unless something changed drastically in 4.0.

That said I haven't attempted to port my own board to 4.0 so I haven't attempted to port a skin between 3.8 and 4.0 yet but everything I've read so far looks like there aren't any changes that would make it impossible.

That was SO 2005. get with the times....the 'glass' look is the new black.

according to the owner of the candlepower forums, this new version of the forum software is so buggy that they reverted to their backup. And there are a number of bugs that will not be fixed until the next release.

BOO to the fool who finds a BETA release acceptable.

Jon, can you start up a forum on Velobase?

It will be different but I'll adapt since 95% of my browsing is with the phone and about the only time I turn on the PC is when I want to do pic uploads.

Life is full of upgrades, pencil sharpeners become antiques.

so you love BF so much you surf it on your phone while driving and in important meetings?? *giggle*

it is taking a bit of getting used to but I like the way a "Quoate" stands out from the post more. the same on PMs.

Bear in mind this is still Beta software and IB (and by extenision Bike Forums) is an early adopter.

Bugs are part of the nature of Beta.

+1!!!!!!!

I am a computer programmer, software implementer and IT administrator and I have to say..... when you are providing solutions to people, first and foremost, you have to give them what they need to do their job in the simplest possible manner with all the necessary features. As Al Davis used to say when he was sane... "just win baby!" This is a forum. We need to be able to determine what the posts are about, read the posts, respond to the posts, create the posts, search the posts, etc. and we need to be able to do it in a time effective and organized manner. We don't give a rat's ass about bells and whistles, we care about functionality and purpose. That's why we ride what we ride and why we're here in the first place. And never put out an application that is going to underperform when compared to the one it is replacing. Even it if has better features, users are going to hate it because it is cumbersome and slow!

Having said all that, I would like you to know that I respect the effort, just not the results.

canopus 11-19-09 03:34 PM

The thing is this could be simply fixed with providing different user skins and fonts for the content. Things have to work, things have to upgrade. I understand... But if forced to read something that gives me a headache.... i will just stop using it. Young'uns can use the fancy bloated small fonts. I would prefer a simpler interface with larger, bolder, easier to read font. This isn't rocket science. just customer service.

Bikeforums borrows a page from the ebay notebook by slowing things down while making "improvements" that no one asked for or wants.

I'm not sure I'd be that harsh. As bad as this new version of the forum is, eBay is infinitely worse in every respect (name me any feature of eBay's, and I'll tell you why it stinks).

Shhhhhh...

I hear through the grapevine that there are some fixes coming very soon for some of the issues we're having. I don't know what all is on the top priority list, but I'll just say that there are some very busy developers somewhere with the irons put to them. As for why we got upgraded, I've heard several reasons, but I suspect that without anything short of a complete and total software meltdown we've got this version for the long haul. Yes it sucks that this software isn't much more than a Beta, and while I've thrown some pretty buggy software out on VeloBase servers from time to time, I also don't have near the traffic and the user base that BikeForums has as a whole (yet). Oh, and VeloBase.com is a side project I don't get paid for, I'd sure test things a whole lot more if it was my day job!

I'm completely with you on that. And I'm leaning on the men behind the code to see what can be done about it. Some of the visual stuff may have to wait a little while till the functionality issues get worked out, but I sure won't let them forget that some of the eyes in the C&V section aren't the best at focusing on small fonts (hell my 28 y.o eyes are having issues here at the house this evening!)

RobbieTunes 11-19-09 06:46 PM

I'll get used to it, 'cause I must.

It would be appropro, tho, for the "C&V" part of the forum to be truly "C&V" We are the keepers of the flame.

I was kind of hoping for more scantily clad women....

....oh, wrong forum.

Or worse, slowing things down while reducing functionality. Apparently the search function with the capability of DOS 0.9 is still with us. The thing's been put online, when it's not but about 90% operational. But the comparison with eBay is quite apt.

About the look-and-feel: what can you say about an interface where the poster's username fades into the background, and the tagline and avatar are more visually prominent. Do the people who design these things ever really stand back and look at them? Sheesh.

I am still out on the upgrade. The reply box is taxing my bifocals to the max NEED LARGER PRINT! I preferred the older version of VB. I moderate/admin on another fair sized board that runs vb and we are holding off on V4 until it is debugged a good bit more. I don't like having to click twice to get a proper reply put in.

Aaron :)

hold <ctrl> on your keyboard and roll the mouse wheel UP.

magic happens.

soonerbills 11-19-09 09:32 PM

Could be worse! We could be reduced to having to use the Craigslist bike forum

Tom Stormcrowe 11-19-09 09:45 PM

We really need to try to keep the upgrade commentary in one thread, in where the tech team will be able to find it.

PLease post here:

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...-Issues-Thread

or here:

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...the-New-Format

I'm closing this thread and sticking it with the 2 redirect links.
