Miyata Pro Help

Can someone help me identify the year of this Miyata Pro I just purchased?

Superbe components (including hubs), Araya rims, Nitto bars. Seat and pedals have been replaced. Cromo stickers on downtube and fork.

Correction - Sugino cranks

81 ,82, 83, 84 ... some of which used Superbe. Not the crank though, they used Suginos. Looks like a Superbe crank, you indicate that it is. Serial # will help provide the frame's birthday. Pro Models has that color scheme through 1984. A great many Pros were sold as frames, the owner or shop built the bikes.
These four years had exact same frames. The OE group on complete bikes were similar. Non were spec'd with Superbe cranks.

Large chain ring is Sugino. Only thing on crank is Aero Mighty.

Serial# K978519

Based on these catalogs, I'm guessing it is an 82 or 83. Can someone help me decipher the serial number scheme?

You are very close with the year, I've got an '84 Team Miyata with the same color scheme. Great Bike. How's it ride? I haven't had the pleasure of riding mine yet (bought it as a bare frame)

Just picked it up earlier today, need to check it over before an extended ride. After a short ride around the neighborhood, it seems similar to my Centurion Comp-TA.

serial # can be crunched if you can provide. There may be access to the Miyata ser. # dats base. The forum's kinda funky the past couple days so if it fails you... post the #. Other hints and analysis can narrow it down more.
Just spotted the Sugino. The crank and bike could be an '83 or 4, not '82. Again, the # if.
I don't think it matters so much. Still one of the best ever made in the early half of the '80s.
Craven has one of the other best. Very simuilar, his edges yours out on paper. I would prefer either.

Just recently, just here at BF, a member stated that Sugino made Superbe Cranks, here it is...
I don't know what you paid for it Mister, that too matters little.... WONDERFULL bike.

Built in '82 .. K = 1982; J = 1981; L = 1983.. see the pattern ? As an '83, summer of 1982, it's possible. Using the links provided by our fellow member, you might be able to pick through the remainder of the components, seem the same to me but... perhaps. At times the actual numeric portion of the ser. # can lead to the part of the year, gets tricky. T-Mar does it at times.
From waht I see, the color and component group COMBINED with the year of manufacture trumps all.
In your case, it simply opoints to two ***. years, the exact same bike. I've seen the race models hanging up at LBSs from 1981 'till 1985. Custs. could've bought 'em or built 'em however.

BTW... pictures in the cats. can be misleading. Texts can be "wrong". I've spotted discrepencies; wheels, exact meas. and cranks, other minor details too. Don't get me wrong, I'm not asserting that they're bogus, just 99.2 % correct with the Pics., descriptions & #'s instead of 100%. Not bad at all !

Thanks for your help old and new, I really appreciate it!!

The derailleurs look like superbe as do the shifters.

Without any doubt, the OP's bicycle is a 1983 model.

I like my '87 512 a lot. Good luck with that

Centurion Comp TA? Nice bike, isn't it. They were made in
1984 only, morphing into the Ironman Dave Scott for 1985
and beyond. I'm still trying to figure out if the Comp TA
model is my favorite or if the '86 Ironman DS is the nicest
of the two. I'm now leaning back toward the Comp TA. I've
got two, one in each color offered. Most I've seen are the
deep red with the silver head tube. I've only seen two or
three in six years in the rich "titanium silver" with the
black head tube. In fact, I've only seen a dozen or so
Comp TAs on eBay (non on CL) since I started looking for
them in 2003 after reading the late Sheldon Brown's endorsement.
He was right about them, as usual.
.
If you haven't already done so, have a look at:
.
www.sheldonbrown.com/centurion
.
At the end of the article there are scans of the 1984
Centurion catalog which includes pics and full specs of
the Comp TA. Among the scans are comparative geometry charts
and tubing weight information and info on Centurion's nice
paintwork, et al.

Mine is the Titanium Silver. I had cracked the little spacer type things between the downtube shifters and the frame and you directed me to a site where a gentleman had replaced his shifters with barcons. I thought it was a elegant solutions and had absolutely no luck find the new spacers so I put a set of Shimano bar ends on late this summer. Strictly friction shift, but seem to work well with the Shimano 600 derailleurs. Thanks again for the help.

Did my first ride on the Miyata today, 20 miles on the local rails to trails. Very nice ride and the bike just seems to want to go if that makes any sense.

The steering isn't as fast/twitchy as my centurion, seems to track very well. Very pleased with the purchase, I'm sure you will like yours!!
