Trek 600 beauty...
--Sorry its not letting me post in appraisals--
My buddy is checking out a really nice looking '85 Trek 600 frame and fork only. No headset, bottom bracket.. nothing. But all Reynolds 531 Whats it worth? Nice blue, US made. Would $250 be too much? |

Too much. I got an '89 660 frame, fork, DA headset, and 3ttt stem for $50. I got a good deal, I admit, but $100 would be more like it.

Yes too much...It ought to have the stock components for that price.
Ive been seeing some dented spray painted 531 frames at $200 |
If it says 531cs on the sticker then the main tubes are 531, the rest lesser quality. Still a super nice frame set.

You could be right. But also consider this page with original Reynolds catalog material and personal comments from Terry from Reynolds.

Interesting... So that Trek catalog says, Frame: 531cs Fork: 531cs Stays: 531cs But that page you linked says the 531cs sticker means its a Club Sport frame set which would only have 531 main tubes like you said. The way its listed in that Trek catalog is pretty damn misleading.... |
Marketing, I guess.
BTW, have one of those frames and find it a great sturdy all rounder. Have done fast pace line centuries at around 4hrs and a meandering 1800 mile bike tour on that Trek. |
Oh ok, it says this:
531 Club Sport or CS - Double butted main tubes - 531 manganese molybdenum(forks) - 501 chrome molybdenum(stays) |

Too much. Complete bike would sell for about that amount around here right now. Building up a frame rarely makes sense, unless you happen to have a full parts bin (free parts). But your market is more on the crazy side pricing wise, so if you are comfortable paying that much for a frameset, go for it.
Personally, even though I have a pretty robust parts bin, I rarely buy framesets. Too much value in a complete bike, even if I don't need the parts, as I always can use an extra set of wheels, bars, stem, seat post, crankset, derailleurs, etc. |

Great frame, if you're 6'6".

You can probably get a whole bike like this with friction shifting for $150 this time of the year.
We dont get a winter. Its hot and sunny here today. |
Sold on eBay for $432.77.
Not Reynold 531 (501 instead) I think this is a tad out of line at the moment, but clearly prices are headed up. ( We'll be calling this a bargain sooner or later. ) http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...rums/43277.jpg |
Speaking of an 1985 Trek 600...just picked this up from the Philadelphia CL earlier today...it's in overall great shape (and my size!)

that catalog looks to me like the whole 600 frame is 531CS isn't this correct?
I never realized there were so many 'grades' of 531 tubing. that gazelle page would be nicer if there was a way to see a sample of decal. but then again it seems 531 is very "mix n match" you could actually have the highest quality main tubes and the cheapest stays and still have a "all 531 frame" so you would have to be a real reynolds geek to tell what is what |

So in this respect, Trek is accurate on saying that the whole bike is 531CS (i.e. 531 main triangle and something else the rest) |
Here are a couple photos of the 600 I picked up today in "as found" condition. I'll have to clean it up and take some better ones outside. I thought this would be a flipper, but, it I think it fits me well...it may become a part of my modest collection...:)
