any one know what this is? any ideas? i looked at the catalogs i could find and can't figure it out

Looks a little like the Triathalon..

i tried to indentify by paint, but it's a bit confusing. the stripes on the toptube and seattube look like the 89 carbon pro. all teh bikes before i think 87 or 88 dont have a fade paint job, and have dots or something on either side of the logo on the downtube. but all the 88's and 89's that are faded fade all the way out to the bottom, not jsut where the logo is.

While I can't be sure due to the non-drive photo, it appears to be a 1989 Peugeot Nice, which was the 3rd from the bottom of the line, sports touring model.

Kind of looks like the 1987 P8, except the 87 did not have aerolevers. Those could have been an upgrade (I do it on all of my keeper bikes). Just check the component grade and you will be able to dial in the model. The 89 models had aerolevers, so TMar is probably right.

87 looks like the best bet. It cant be a 89, the decals are not even close. All 89's have that a sorta squiggle on seat tube.

Sorry guys, I had a few critical typos in that post. It should read 1988 Peugeot Nice, not 1989. And it's 5th from the bottom of the line. About the only things I got right was the sports touring designation and hopefully, the model.

Looks a lot like my 88 Ventoux, though i'm not certain on geometry.

Yes, it is the same bicycle. However, there was no Ventoux in 1988. If it is Reynolds 501 with Exage Sport,then it is a Nice.

I'm at work so i can't look, but mine has a complete 105 group i think. the only other marking i've seen is slr on the brakes. Could've sworn i've seen ventoux's in non-US 1988 catalogs. Never seen a us catalog.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I'm pretty sure that is not a 105 rear derailleur. The cage is a bit too clunky and the parallelogram arms do not appear to be black. I'm pretty sure that is an Exage. The 105 brakes also had the designation on them. To be sure check, the part number stampings on the back of the components. New 105 used 1050 part numbers, while Exage Sport used A450 part numbers.

Feel bad hijacking this guy's thread, but now it has me perplexed. I've posted the bike here before and people seemed to say ventoux.

Did the Nice pick up the Ventoux's Model number in 88? As in mine has a PH 501 on the id sticker which was the designation for the Ventoux.

To the best of my recollection, there were no model numbers in 1988, at least not in the USA catalog. Certainly, I didn't include them in my spreadsheet and there are none in the 1989 catalog, so 1988 may have been the year that Peugeot USA dropped their use. The other notable item is that Peugeot USA totally revamped the lightweight model names in 1988, with the Triathlon being the only holdover. The Ventoux and Nice were models directly below the Triathlon in 1987 and 1988 respectively, so it wouldn't surprise me if your bicycle had a PH501 designation on the sticker. Apparently, Nice was simply the replacement USA name for the Ventoux, so I can easily imagine how someone would mistake this for a Ventoux. I'm presuming Peugeot USA's marketing department simply decided that French cities had a bigger recognition factor with the average American than French mountains. If MiamiJim happens to see this post, he will probably have the definitive answer.

Ah that would make a lot of sense. Your answer that is, not the decision by peugeot to change the names. Also strange is the change of fork material; i've seen earlier ventouxs with a 501 fork. My bike, we'll call it a Nice now haha, is only 3 tubes 501. It does have a strange reynolds sticker that i've only seen a few other examples of. The Bottom part that typically says Ti Reynolds Limited says something like Ti Reynolds 531 Limited. Might not be in that exact order, but for some odd reason has a 531 thrown in there. Have yet to understand what that's about.

I'd like to see more pictures of the OP's bike/part lists. Mine has had some changes made, i.e. a Miche Competition hub.

Peugeot used the aphanumeric designations through the 90's, they just didnt refer to the models by them.

The PH501 models originaly had 3 main tubes 501 with Carbolite 103 everywhere else. It went to full 501 tubing throughout and apparently went back to 3 main tubes only as there's no designation on the forks to say otherwise.

it's not a hijack, it's interesting. unfortunately, i can't post more photos. i was trying to decide whether to buy it or not, and the seller was being kind of an ass, i asked him what the components were, and he said: "It is not that I do not know what "componets" are - Since I am an ex semi-pro BMX'er and I just do not want to take the time to check out what is on this bike." mind you, the bike was sitting in his house. he goes on to say "But it is a road bike so I have no use for it, plus the tubes/tires are very very very skinny, in which a small pebble will most likely pop the tubes - not to mention the valve stems on theese ity bity teenie weenie tubes are so so thin that they tear all the time... And I am tired of replacing the Stupidly manufactured Tubes because of the valve stems ripping off all the time... You go through 2 or 3 tubes just trying to get them on, a trojan condom has thicker walls than that of theese road bike tubes!!!!!!! "

anyway, the bike sold cheap and it's my size, i should have bought it, but he also wouldn't give me a shipping price and was generally hard to deal with... in the meantime, i'm suddenly obsessed with Zunow's
