I visited in October looking for help picking out a birthday bike for my boyfriend. You all were very helpful with your posts; but I was unsure and I ended up getting him something else he wanted.

I can't figure out what to get him with the holidays approaching. He's bought everything that he wants (stupid Black Friday deals) except for an xbox 360, but I don't want to get him that (I don't think he'd use it as he doesn't use the system he has now and he has plenty of other techy multimedia type things, including something to play his NetFlix).

So now, just in time for the snow, how about another go at it?

For someone 5'11" whose Trek 1420 was stolen last spring (he'd moved it somewhere covered to get it out of the snow... incidentally it was also somewhere more secluded and therefore the bike was easier to steal).

I'd guess a 50cm frame would be too small for a guy who is 5'11". I'm 6' and I ride a 58.

Is this a possibility? It isn't C&V, but does he prefer C&V bikes? It is small, but from what I remember of your bf, he rode a little bike for his size.

Yes, I agree 50cm is too small. I am the same height as your boyfriend and I find 56-58 to be very comfortable.

Second bike will fit someone at about 5-4. In addition, its a mediocre bike.

The Trek could be interesting, will probably not last long Just make sure it is the right size. Its NOT a 2001 bike. That's the type of tubing used on the bike, 1980s vintage. I am guessing it's a Trek 420, somewhere in the 1984 +/- age.

You really need to dial in on size first. Then pounce on a bike that is the right size.

50cm too small. I'm 5'5" and ride a 50 or 52.

+1 for the size considerations. But, if you look at the size of his stolen Trek bike (img grabbed from previous post) :

looks like a 53-54 cm or so to me max (21 inch size)

that said, the unknown blue bike is overpriced and not that great. Plus the fact that is nameless, makes it a bit difficult. If the Trek is the correct size (a rule of the thumb is to compare the size of its head tube to the size of the head tube of the stolen bike) you might got yourself a bargain.
