Does rebuilding a wheel damage a hub?

I just had a wheel built up with new spokes and an old high flange Dura Ace hub.

Does installing spokes on this hub and using the wheel damage the spoke holes? Is there a limit to the number of rebuilds a hub will survive?

Depends. Generally, you can tell from looking at a hub how it was previously laced, so yes, some damage is done.

This doesn't necessarily mean the hub is not sound though. I have built close to a dozen sets of wheels re-using hubs without incident. The one hub shell failure I did have, was on a hub where I thought it would be smarter to route the spokes counter to the previous lacing pattern. I was not injured, but the hub... RIP.
