Suntour Alpha 5000

How does it compare with Shimano, level-wise; 105ish?

Very nicely made, a little on the heavy size. Just a little.

Actually is a very pretty group. The whole group is Suntour/Diacombe/Sugino all branded as alpha 5000 versions of the individual brands. The Sugino cranks are the gem of the group aesthetically with a copper big ring and everything else with silver finish.

yes I think 105 or RX100. my first 'real' bike a Bianchi Sport SX had A 5000 on it. it was great but then again it was, as I said, my first new bike, first index shifting and I think I would have been impressed positron *giggle* did you find something with it? I am eyeing a 'garage queen' on ebay with it to return my Sport to its former glory

Do you have pictures of this group? I'd like to see that copper chainring.

Just got the bike delivered today and I am slowly trying to take it apart. I suspect that the next couple of days I will be shoveling snow but early next week will try to take a couple of shots

Edit... since you insisted and the snow is falling nice and thick outside, here are a couple of quick (read: crappy) ones, but you can get some idea:

this one is with flash:

and this one is without (so not sharp) so the real color (albeit under fluorescent light) is there:

Really this (and everything else in the universe) needs to be photographed outsize on indirect sunlight, but...

The interesting thing is the co-branding. You see the Sugino brand with the model name (GP-130) as well as the alpha 5000 brand (that one if you look closely is a sticker, that usually falls off with hard use, but this baby was pampered)

In Suntours lineup it may be equal to 105 but it works like Exage or 'Z' series.

Jim,

wasn't Exage made a bit later? Like the 90s? I personally prefer the way Shimano stuff works and feels (I'd use any 600 indexed group over any Superbe Pro group for example) and, really, the order and the associate cost of a component do not mean that much. For example for a couple of years (87 and 88), the 105 SLR brakes were the best brake on the market, bar none (Dura Ace and all Campy included), so this contemporary group at least as brakes go, is classes below the 105, even though those Dia Compe brakes are not bad at all.

Alpha 5000 was 1987-1988 and intended for bicycles in the $400 US range. This would make it comparable to Shimano Light Action (1986-1988) or Exage Sport (1988), which would place it just below 105. Shimano's SIS was far superior to AccuShift during this period. You'll probably be happier just sticking this in friction mode and leaving it there.
