I put my good bikes away before the salt hits the roads and swing my leg over my Peugeot Poor Boy Single Speed. I do not particularly like riding the Peugeot but is does the job in the winter.

Winter in Thunder Bay is a serious issue and it is not unheard of for people to die in the harsh conditions. Dress warm, go slow and stay off of the busy streets. I spend a lot of time riding sidewalks in the winter.

But the question is what does one do in the Winter? I hide from the cold. I try my best to travel to a warm place(Jamaica) to ride my Giant NRS3 mountain bike. And for bike hunting, coupled with exercise, I deliver hand made flyers door to door inviting people to call me if they have an old Ten Speed that they would consider selling. I start at six in the morning, deliver 200 flyers and by the time I get home the telephone starts ringing. For every two hundred flyers delivered, I get about four calls right away. And every so often a gorgeous bicycle shows up, such as my mid fifties Super Mondia Special.

balindamood - THAT'S what I'm talking about! :-) looks a lot like what I'm currently building up. almost there - still need the studs and the shifters to go on. funny how I spent most of last night on the easy stuff like brake pads and adjustment; rear stand; fenders and pedals.

It's got horizontal d/o s. Believe me, it took me a while to find an old mountain bike with them, most have verticals. I paid a bit extra at auction, but I sold the other three bikes in the pile this one came in, removed a few parts and wound up getting the frame for free.

Rode it into work today. Told GF I was gonna take the bus, but I missed it ;). Oh, well, I'll take the bus back. (They've got bike racks).

This thing gets more bemused comments from motorists than any of my other bikes.

OK, you've finally inspired me for the next project: That UO-8 I picked up at the transfer station is getting redone as a very vintage-ish path racer. Only question is whether I go SSFG or Sturmey Archer.

I believe you said something about possibly having a UO-8 fork that would fit?

Got home from work early tonight. Got another 30 yards of the driveway shoveled out. Am hoping to be up to the front walk by Christmas Eve. The Porsche is still buried.

Update: I built this thing on a complete lark. I figured it would get used maybe one or two days every couple of years, because that's about how often we get enough snow for it. Shows how much I know-- in the last couple of months, we've had far more days with snow and ice on the roads than without. This thing has more miles on it over the last couple months than all my other bikes combined, and I'm relieved I made it. I even put the spare hitch for my trailer on it so I can haul stuff around.

Sheesh, what a winter. Another storm comin' Tuesday night....

What type of carbs are you running on that. (you said air "filters", so I assume it's a twin cyl. twin carb. setup.) If it is a twin, show us some pics of the other side of the bike!

well perhaps this weather is your fault for building a "snow bike" just in case you need it!

More likely it should have never snowed once I built the bike.

I am sorry to say that here in Middle TN we have actually had a winter this year. Lots of snow, rain, and cold. I haven't been on the bike for 3 weeks. It is usually in the 40's and 50's most of the winter.

I got into xcountry skiing pick up skis and boots at a thrift shop cheap It perfectly fits cycling, when spring rolls around Ill be in great shape when I hit the bike. Its alot of fun,

You hit the magic combination. I discovered XC back in Erie in the early 70's; here again to use as a winter trainer.

If I were to build a winter commuter it would be along the lines of a few bikes posted here. Either an older road bike with some clearance for knobby cross or studded tires or a older MTN bike either one set up fixed with full coverage fenders. The gear ratio would be lower than I normally run in the summer (70-75 gi), but higher than my polo bike (48gi). With working in a bike shop and seeing everyone who does commute in the winter coming in for their freewheel, cassette hub, shifter, or derailleurs that has stopped working because of the cold weather and the salt fixed is the way to go. In fact today I had the pleasure of freeing up a front derailleur that stopped moving completely.

I think this is not a taboo in this forum. Unless it falls under one of the Anti-Drewing clauses. But don't show that thing in Car Free.
