Quill Stem Help.

I just bought a Coda 22.2mm quill stem for my Schwinn Voyaguer 11.8, and it doesn't fit. I was under the impression that all American made bikes used 22.2mm, I now know better.

Does anybody know what size I need?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey Jonathan,
This recent thread discusses Schwinn stem sizing:

Well then, looks like I need to break out the metal file.....

Yeah, the Starfighter was one cool interceptor. I finally got to see a couple fly at the 2008 Vectrin Dayton air show.

Thanks for the quick reply and the good information.

In my quest for a 21.1 mm road stem I found that Niagra sells a touring stem for about $10, a gentleman on this board...tmoneygetpaid has a couple that are missing parts (one is missing the expander and the other is missing the handlebar clamp bolt) and I found another gentleman who has 2 complete that he is shipping out to me on Monday.

rockhound- Thanks, I'll look into that if my idea doesn't pan out like I hope it will.

I semi-routinely volunteer at nonprofit organization that fixes old bikes and sells them for very low prices, I'm sure I can organize a trade of an old crankset of mine for the proper stem, or one I can file down.

Filing a stem down wouldn't be unsafe or anything..... right?

You'll also have the expander or wedge size to deal with if you do not find a proper replacement.

I also found a few on ebay, unfortunately they were asking upwards of $30 with a BIN price plus shipping.

Could your bike be sized for a 22.0mm French stem?? 21.1 is quite a sizable jump from 22.2.

I've been looking at the Schwinn replacement parts catalogs, and it indeed is the 21.1. I'm pretty sure I can file one down to the proper size without a problem.

Thanks for the help. I'll report back when I get a stem to file on.
