Possibly my last ride of the year on Velo de Ville. We are getting our first serious snow storm of the year, followed by at least a week of sub-freezing temperatures.



Time to break out the studded-tire and fender-equipped Barracuda A2B, which sadly is not French.

Thanks papik!, Yup it does have the Pechiney Avaitube 5086 Aluminum Sticker on it. So was the festina replica paint job a option color scheme ?

That may be why i have not been able to find it... looking for something that doesnt exists.

Another PH501 here, I just finished rebuilding the bike today.


For it's size, I am surprised that it undercuts the Peugeot catalog weight by 1.6lbs (at least as shown, a few parts swaps but nothing much lighter that stock except pedals and perhaps tires).
The stock headset is whomping heavy I tell you! I couldn't believe that the bike comes in at a true 22.5lbs.

You can still upgrade to a new Stronglight A9 headset with cartridge bearings. They will still be a lot lighter than the original (steel?) headset on the bike...
The new A9's sell for as low as the low $40's at eBay, if you time buying it right...

Light for a bike with clinchers. Reynolds played around with 501 tubing quite a bit. It was intended to compete against straight gage Durifort/Vitus 888 and Columbus Aelle tubing for mid range models.

Reynolds used 4130 chrome moly steel which was much more readily available on the world market vs. 531 which was a specialty UK only alloy. Also the tubing blanks started out seamed versus pierced like 531.

The original version of 501 had straight gage main tubes and weighed 2300g. They also 501SB - Single Butted main tubes and 501DB - Double Butted main tubes.

The final iterations of Reynolds 501 was 501SL which had 0.9mm x 0.6mm butted main tubes and the wall thicknesses of rear stays where thinner than the original version.

I bought a 1990's Bertin beater frame made of Reynolds 501 tubing. I was surprised how light it is (finger nail dinging the tubes test). I've nicked named it "Spotted Dick" ( that's a British dessert treat).

Wet weather's here, need to throw some junk on it and see how it rides.

Probably , this paint was also on other steel frames...

This is mine, the same frame but with a straight fork and a triple crankset ...this 1996 model named "chrono 1000" is also dificult to find on the catalogs...[IMG][/IMG]

First post here, and I don't have a spectacular machine to show like some I've seen, but you asked to see French bikes ........

This is my wife's recently acquired UE-18 - I'm not sure of the year (maybe '77-'78 ?), and I think it might be a European-bought bike.
We live near a couple major Air Force bases, and I've seen stuff for sale on C-list, that was obviously brought back from overseas.
This one has a little green sticker at the head tube bottom that says "Rhein-Main AB" - An air base in Germany.

Anyway, it needs new tires, and I still need to clean it up, and go over all the mechanics,
but it's pretty nice overall, and pretty original too - Right down to the porteur bars.
Even the original lights still work - Not bad for $35, I think .

Welcome, @mixteup! Excellent find, and a steal at $35. I wouldn't change much.

Those schrader valves suggest the work of an American, though.

I agree about the valves - I suppose it's possible that the rims could have been drilled for Schrader tubes, after the fact.
That and the spoke guard make you think - US model. Did they have those ugly plastic discs on euro bikes at that time?

I'm just going on where it was (Germany), at one point in it's life.
But I guess I might never know 100% - And the guy I bought it from had no clue about anything like that.

I have one too, and agree that it doesn't feel super-light, although mine is a 60cm frame size, so quite a bit bigger. Did they quote weight for a specific frame size?

I'm away from home now, but will weigh mine once I'm back, to see how my impressions square with reality.

If you believe the advertising hype....

BITD, a medium to good quality bike with an alloy steel frame, alloy clincher rims and alloy components weighed in about 24 Lbs. to 26 Lbs. depending on size.

Tubulars knocked 2-3 Lbs. off of the overall weight: 21 Lbs to 23 Lbs.

At our shop we had a scale hanging right by the door so we weighed a lot of bikes. We used it as a selling point to to move customers up from gas pipe bikes to a better quality ride.

I stopped weighing my bikes at least 25 years ago because on a hard climb, all I thought about was the bike's weight. These days I just ride the bloody beast!

Nice Chrono Papik! although i dig all of the old Peugeots also. theres something to me about seeing these bikes from a company that had long been gone from the US.

Schrader tubes are easier to find than the Dunlop/Woods valve tubes that probably were original equipment. No drilling required.

Schwalbe has some threaded metal schrader valve tubes that will look like Dunlop valves.

My "Tout French" 1984 Gitane Tour de France,..... with all of its stock Italian components (Ofmega Mistral and Gippiemme.... what was Gitane thinking??!) replaced by more appropriate French stuff Full Spidel drivertrain, Stronglight SLJ saetpost, Philippe TdF bars, Reydel GTi saddle and Mafac/Spidel LSX brakeset.
Additional changes I did was was to change out the Delrin cupped Stronglight B10 headset for an all aluminum, needle bearing, A9 in anodized black finish. I replaced the B10 because I could not get it adjusted to my liking. It was either to tight or too loose, kinda nothing in the middle, plus the cups were starting to grey out on me..... Also found a "Cycles Gitane" Pantographed ITM stem for the bike in black too. It is the only non-French component on the bike, but I think the Gitane pantographing on it makes up for it. The wheelset was an almost unused take-off I had to drive almost 200 miles to pick up. Just had to buy them because it has period perfect Wolber Aubisque 32H rims and Spidel Professionel 700 hubs (When will I ever find another wheelset like it??). I mounted Michelin tubs to finish them off.
..... The frame finally has the components it always deserved. After all, the bike honors the most famous race in France!

Dilecta Le Blanc

Recently rebuilt (had been fixed gear) Dilecta Touring bike. Tried to find as many French parts as I could;
Stonglight cranks, Super Champion rims, Pelissier hubs Mafac brakes, Michelin tires! etc.


Set up with Suntour FD and RD. Added a new Brooks B17N. Now I'm just waiting for winter to go away for a longer test ride. Weight as shown is 24.6 lbs (12kg), typical for the period.

Good "eye" @mountaindave .It does have those original brazed on eyelets and I am still searching for an appropriate rack. Not sure how to handle a mount at the top. Any suggestions are welcome. Don't know how much actual touring I will do with it. Most of my touring is done with my Salsa Vaya.

My 1985 Vitus Plus Carbone 7
Re-posting my Carbone in this thread since the original post was killed by PB.
Good, cause I have done a few weight weenie upgrades on the bike since I last posted up pics in this thread.
Changed out the FW to a Maillard Course Dural, all aluminum FW.
Changed out the brakeset to my CLB Compact Professionel brakeset with CLB aero levers and CLB Aluminum cased brake cables.
Changed the wheelset to Roval Aerodynamics, I previously had these on my Gitane TdF, but I decided it really belongs on this bike.
Changed the pedals to Look Keo Blade II's with Ti axles.
Changed out the saddle to a Selle Italia Turbo SLG, with aluminum rails.
All with a new weenie weight of now at 16.8 pounds (From 17.25, previous to changes).
It is now super weenie at sub 17 pound weight, plus it is still "Tout French"!
Now, if I can find one of those Stronglight Ti spindled BB's I might break the 16.5 pound barrier!
