Updated Gipiemme groupset

Hello again!

Since my Simplex SLJ 5500 is a Gipiemme branded one, and since I'm italian as well as the brand, I opted to update my bicycle groupset accordingly

There's my new Gipiemme Crankset

I only need a couple of dust caps now!

Low end bike boom... but I bet it rides nice. The saddle and bars were gonna be for my girl, but the frame was too big, so I’ll probably make it rideable again and see if craigslist wants it.

Update to my earlier post, a couple of pages back. The Peugeot had a stripped pedal thread, and I didnt feel like messing with French threads, so I took off the Stronglight TS, which had a few other cosmetic issues. I had a Sugino GT 52/34 laying around, so I put it on until I can find a more appropriate crank. I was surprised to find a 126mm BB spindle. Is that normal for these? No markings on bearing cups or spindle. Did my first real ride yesterday, and it all worked pretty well. Stock Simplex RD, Atom 5 speed 24t freewheel, Shimano Exage FD (broken Simplex FD), and Campy aero levers. FrankenFrench? Maybe, but it rides nice. It's not a museum piece, it's a rider. Hope to make it to Pasadena Vintage ride Sunday.

+1 - that Sugino crank is classy and the Exage is unobtrusive. People are going to be too busy looking at the classic curve in the fork and the chrome socks anyway. Very nice.

It is. The Bauer was really nice. Recently saw it up for sale on CL. A guy literally beat me to it by a step. I would have bought both, at $65 each... The Follis had a 90's shimano derailleur that I changed to Suntour. Simplex bar ends.

looks like these... VeloBase.com - Component: Simplex Cross Commande (friction)
lever covers are in poor shape, but they are still there. Has the engraving on the body, so I guess they are the friction as opposed to the retro friction.

Never sold any Follis bikes. Didn't have access to them during the bike boom, afterwards the US source dried up. Saw a few during the 70's. The lower priced models where standard French fare. The middle and high end models were very nice (for French bikes Ha,Ha,Ha).

The top of the line Follis frames were Italian quality cosmetic wise.

Remember, The French built bikes to ride, not look at!

BTW, Follis built many of the tandem frames sold by other French brands: Peugeot, Motobecane, Bertin to name a few. Mel Pinto tandem frames were made by Follis too!

They were easy to spot, they had a twin plate fork crown:

That’s a bad entry (as my note indicates on veobase). It shows both models under one entry. The last photo shows the retrofriction model with the notch in the lever. If you have that model, you just made money - the levers alone would fetch at least $100. Though they are so rare that a fair price is hard to set.

Good heavens, what an elegant bike! No surprise, I suppose, since the French invented the word "chic".

I surrender to temptation and bought an actual barn find ca. 73 Champion du Monde. I bought it mostly because I did not have a CdM with the plain block letters. Although you cannot see it in the auction photo, the frame finish was rough. Several hours of work with 1500 sandpaper, rubbing compound, and then polishing yielded an improved finish. It should be repainted, but I wanted one that was not. I am still working on the wheels but I didn't want to wait to ride it. More photos later.

LOL. I have eight Carré built Lejeunes. A bit of an unhealthy obsession maybe?
