I picked up a couple of French steeds in the past week or so. The first is a LeJeune and the second a hardly used Mercier Mixte. Both bikes are from the late sixties to early seventies, as nearly as I can tell. I plan to restore the LeJeune and the Mercier is up for grabs in the For Sale forum at the moment.

Some beautiful bikes in this thread! Currently working on this one, pretty sure the frame is a Follis 572 except it was an nos frame set and a NY collector started to build up with quality French components (the 572 was all Campy). I think I have found differences between the 572 and 472 frame sets - the 672 is pretty easy to differentiate. Will post better pics when it is finished.

@Tychom That is a stunner and very ingenious how you utilized the hammer as a stand.
I haven't started wrenching on my next French beauty yet (soon enough) but I did install s compact Stronglight Impact Crank (50-34) about a month ago and yesterday I installed a rear rack using Tubus stay mounting clamps. It worked perfectly this morning on my commute and my back appreciates not lugging around a backpack full of items.

Will you indulge a novice and tell me which model that is? It is exactly what I picture in my imagination when I think of building my perfect Peugeot; well, aside from the drop bars anyway. I would have to go with Porteurs to save my back. And maybe some nice alloy fenders...

Originally intended as a sort of Path Racer, I have found that I like my old Gitane for longer rides as well. So I've bought her a couple of presents: a V.O. handlebar bag on a nice Soma front rack, and a Banjo Brothers saddlebag (closest match I find within my budget). That alone might have been worthy of a photo in here, but then we went riding in the fog downriver at Hastings, Minnesota.
I think this is the best photograph I've taken all year:

My, i think, '89 Peugeot Cosmic. Fully restored and replaced with a Shimano 600 tricolor groupset, except the crankset. The original parts were to bad to reuse.

Hmmmm....... Never heard of the Cosmic. What I know about are the Galaxie and the Comete. I did not know Peugeot made a third model.
Despite the big recall Peugeot had on these Peicheney system frame bikes, lots still exist being ridden with no problems by the public. All that were returned to dealers were ordered by the company to have their frames hack sawed apart by the Peugeot bike dealers. All because of Peugeot's lawyers being deathly afraid of litigation from owners that might have their bikes come apart. Frankly, I think it was an over-reaction from the company because of a few bikes that were defective to start with thus the frames came apart. But I bet, just like the general hysteria around bonded bike frames back then, it's mostly just bunk.....
