I picked up this '80s Mercier recently. Here is a picture from the ad. I have it up on the stand and am tearing it down. It didn't cost me much. It has Campy shifters, hubs, pedals, derailleurs, bottom bracket, headset and crankset. I will post pictures once the makeover is complete. It is in very good condition. It is too small for me so it will move on.

I surrender to temptation and bought an actual barn find ca. 73 Champion du Monde. I bought it mostly because I did not have a CdM with the plain block letters. Although you cannot see it in the auction photo, the frame finish was rough. Several hours of work with 1500 sandpaper, rubbing compound, and then polishing yielded an improved finish. It should be repainted, but I wanted one that was not. I am still working on the wheels but I didn't want to wait to ride it. More photos later.

Here's a '78 Gitane Vuelta which I picked up awhile back in a slightly neglected state. It's too small for me, but I just couldn't pass it up - Vitus 971, 1st Gen Shimano 600, etc. As you can see, it cleaned up really well, despite the years - a sign of great built quality. It also rides beautifully, and got me hooked on better Gitanes from this era. The '75 Super Olympic (Corsa in the US) is more my size, but will require much more work to even come close to the Vuelta (which will have to go).

Great job! I'm really impressed by the finish you've achieved - care to share a little more of the clean-up process on the frame? Specifically I'd like to know how far gone the paint was, as I have a similar decision to make on a '75 Gitane Super Olympic I recently picked up. I'm reluctant to refinish it and lose the authenticity, but I'm equally concerned about rubbing through the existing paint in an effort to improve things.
