Finally got myself a 3 speed

Edit 1/14/10: Added pictures see page 2.

I am in San Francisco for the week visiting some friends but was still able to score a bike at the local dump (thanks to my dad).

I have been looking for a Raleigh three speed in my size for a while and it looks like my prayers to the bike gods have been answered. It's even the color I wanted. Only problem is that the Brooks is missing. Beggers can't be choosers though right?

I have to settle for non-drive-side iPhone pics for now because my parents are somewhat technically challenged but it looks perfect. I'm really excited.

Can any Raleigh experts tell me a rough age (60's/70's) from these crappy pics? I will check the date code on the SA hub when I get home but I just am curious.

I'm going to guess mid-'60s, judging from the decals and pedals. Bronze Green? Nice score. My dad had a Green one when I was a kid, so that's what I wanted, but I found a black one and I love it.

The decal lettering looks to be late 50s-early 60s. I think they went to a more modern style typeface in the late 60s. Have your dad check the Sturmey hub for a date code. It should have a 1 or 2-digit month and 2-digit year stamped on it near the Sturmey logo and model designation. Congrats....people are finally catching on again to how good these bikes are.

Yep... the hub should tell the age. Mine is 65 12 which means December 1965.

I agree that it should be a 60's model.

I like the bronze green too...most of my Raleighs are green.

Nice bike, the older Raleigh decals look better in my opinion.

Thanks for the responses everybody. I am very excited and have my eye out for a B72 or B66 now. I got word that the date code on the hub is 68 8.
Now I have something to look forward to when I get home--the 60 and sunny weather in SF has me dreading returning to winter in Boston. I'll get some real pictures up too as soon as I have her in my possession.

At the dump? In San Francisco? Can't you swap a bike like that for a late model Lexus GS350 in San Francisco?

The following can be sung to the tune of "Money" (I like the 1960s Beatles version ... very appropriate here)

"The best things in life are free, and I can post them here on "C&V"...I want a Raleigh ... that's what I want!"

Awesome catch!

Merry Christmas to you!!! That bike is gonna shine up great. I'm such a big fan of bronze green that I'm gonna paint my car that color some day.

I have a Brook's B66 on my 3-speed PUCH. Perfect for a 3-speed! It's like it, and by proxy, and my 'seat' have vanished. I could easily ride all day on one of those on a 3spd.

The way I read it the OP was in SF but dad found the bike at the dump in Beantown and sent the cellphone photos to the OP who then posted them. Thus the delay in getting the hub date code and other information. All the OP has seen so far is the photos of his new toy.

You read it correctly. I usually keep my eye out for deals when I'm on vacation but don't even bother when I'm in the Bay area...I thought the prices on vintage steel were inflated in Boston....

Keep an eye on Chain Reaction. They often have sales on Brooks Saddles. Right now you can get a B67-S in Dark Green for $35 + shipping. It's marketed as a Lady's saddle, as it's shorter, and you'd neat a seatpost clamp to install it on your old seatpost, but several gentleman ride the S model.

They recently had the B66 on sale, too, for about $75.

Bikes in that condition deserve to be picked up by folks like you. That's great that another fine example falls into the right hands. Congrats!

I wouldn't call it a "dump find" at all. It was probably just parked in a lovely, green park. And some idiots happened by who threw their trash out of their car - and this started a trend.

Now you need to explain that '63 split window in your avatar. Looks like maybe it needs a paint job. May I suggest.. Bronze Green?

Sadly, the split window is not mine. However, I do have a 63 hard top in much the same condition begging to be restored. It has been sitting in my garage since 1979 untouched, someday it will shine like new (but probably not in Bronze Green...looks great on a C&V bike, not sure about a C&V Corvette).

I would have thought that it was a little earlier year than that. Don't forget that the rear wheel may have been changed. Look around the seatpost for a serial #. Brooks #72 was on a lot of those. I found one all beaten up in the garbage ^ not restrorable. Sold the B-72 for $35 ! Clean & wax,,,, wax,,, wax. You will be surprised how nice it will look !
