I always took "hand profiled" to mean that the lugs were filed thin by hand. I would bet your lug lines came out as good or better that the originals, some of the Raleighs I have seen you would think someone had a whole lot of coffee. I bought a decal set from Greg softley for my Raleigh a while back and I agree that they are really nice.
Anyway, original or not it looks very nice. The powder coat may be better in the long run anyway.

Great job SouthPaw, love it. I'd love to share pics of mine from last year, but I can't figure out how to link pics in the new "improved" format. So much for intuitive user controls. Is there some new procedure you have to do to find the "link pics" icons that used to appear at the top of the reply box?
Anyhow, love the pics of your GS, very drool-worthy.

So I tried it several ways, no luck. I think the new format for BF sucks, but I doubt seriously anyone cares a non-paying member's thoughts on the topic. The old format was pretty easy to navigate and understand, but this one really limits how much I want to participate.
Anyhow, glad you saw the pics I sent on Flickr and congrats again on a superb build so far.

thanks, poprad. i saw your set-- very nice, i wish mine was in as original good shape as yours. to link to individual pics, i click on "all sizes" above the main pic, then choose the size pic i want to link to. now the pic is right-clickable (or ctrl-clickable on a mac) with a "copy image location" option.

Most people seem to agree with you about the site, I am ok with it. I have noticed that since it's introduction there have been subtle changes and it has gotten much better (or maybe I am just growing used to it?)

+1 - I don't even notice it anymore...it just takes a little time to get used to. If they changed it back to the old style now, we'd complain because it was different.

Great job. One of the nicest Comp. G.S.'s I have seen. My 78 Comp G.S. has been my primary ride for several years. I think you will really like yours. Congrats!!!

Well, I don't know why but I no longer have the little icons across the response box top...they just dissapeared when the new changes went into effect. The funny thing is, I am travelling and using my wife's computer. With my computer back in Baghdad I still see all the icons across the Reply box, so maybe it's an OS based problem, although both machines are running XP.
I dunno, and it's too much trouble to figure out why, I like tech stuff when it works but despise having to nut through figuring out why they don't. Just not worth the effort.

Very impressive. How were the wheels after sitting outside all that time? Did they have to be trued or were they still good? Each time I get a bike that is old and neglected, it seems to be the wheels that are the most challenging. Even if they shine up and you can repack the bearings, getting them true seems almost impossible.

awesome, anxiously waiting to see what you find!
thanks. these rims were out of true (laterally and radially), but not severely, and they trued right up without problems. i don't know if these had ever been rebuilt-- was it normal for this bike to come with butted stainless spokes? however, the weinmann aluminum finish has oxidation in places that just doesn't come out with chemicals or scrubbing, and some of the eyelets are a little rusty as well. you can't see this from my pics, but it's noticeable up close.

Really nicely done. I may follow your lead with the fenders when I start restoring my own 78'.
I should bring it next time I am in Mass. I suggest we organize a 78' Raleigh Competition GS meet.
Those fenders are tight! Thanks for posting the photos... It allows me to see what it looks like before I attempt it. I really like the look. I may go for the zeppelin fender look.
Why didn't you leave on the excessively large rear reflector... it is pure vintage bigness!

Man, where do you guys find these things??? Both of these are my size or close, arrrrrgh, lol. I see them about once a year, usually
dusty and dirty, and rotten tires. They're always spoken for, and they laugh when I ask if they're for sale. Oh well, I will have to be
happy with my 80 M-II equipped Super Course until one comes along.,,,,BD
I am heading to the flea market now, maybe I will get lucky, hehe. I will dig in the garage when I get backin an hour or two.
