Bikes with MXL tubing
I know that the Merckx MX Leader has MXL tubing but do any other bikes that you guys can think of that has the MXL tubing?

Is MXL the same as MAX? If so, Dancelli made bike frames out of it.

MXL was custom produced by columbus to Merckx specs, it is similar to but not identical to MAX. No other bikes other than Merckx used MXL tubing.

My Serotta T-Max was made with MaxOR tubing. Welded. A friends Koga FullPro-S is made with Max tubing. Tubing flown into Japan, Miyata made a frame of it, tubing came as frame back to Europe.

this is certainly interesting. as gr23932 points out the MX Leader tubset is a MAX tube set with "custom" TT and stays. so that makes it a unique frameset? Bianchi had several framesets custom made by Columbus for them some with SL tubes most
completely different I sold a beautiful Merckx MXL once I wish I could find the pics. it was the only bike I ever built and sold that I thought was better than my own. I really liked the fork crown and the massive look of the lugset in general. as for bikes made of MAX tubing, Bianchi offered a road frame for 2 years in '90 and '91. in '91 it came as a complete bike with Dura Ace (UGH). Bianchi also made (or atleast they were cataloged, wether they were produced is another story) two very odd bikes out od MAX that year. one was a MTB with a very odd looking frame the Signature 2" and a cross bike with a standard looking frame. I perseonally own, as I am sure most of you are tired of hearing me mention, two MAX Bianchi road frames and a MAX cross frame (european) I once saw at the Lawee/Univega warehouse in Mass, they were doing an 'inhouse' bikeshow rather than atttending Interbike, a Bertoni made from MAX. since Bertoni was not really a popular brand again I am not sure if these ever were produced. I have seen online several custome bikes Built from MAX a Llewellyn and just now I found a pic of a Zullo http://www.llewellynbikes.com/thegallery/album36, http://italiancyclingjournal.blogspo...-by-zullo.html |
I thought that MXL and MAX tubing were different. Some of the older Merckxs have the MAX label while the newer ones have the MXL. I am by no means an expert.
|
Isn't it that the earlier had the conventional toptube and that the later had them fitted the other way round?

Getting this thread back to life... I was looking for info about bertoni and I found this line... The answer is that yes, bertoni with columbus max tubing indeed saw the market, how popular it was? no idea because I have seen only one. I have one Bertoni built with columbus max. Have not put it together yet because was a nice found from one of my friends. So i got the the frame now because is a little small for him, and is a tad small for me so i can make it work better than him.
Cheers.

I've seen a Marinoni made of MAX, was for sale around here forever. It was different in the areas mentioned from my MXL.

Just to throw a related wrench into the works, Guerciotti put out some Columbus EL (OS) badged frames with MAX chainstays; though no mention of it on the frame:

I sold one when I worked in Mass but I think Bianchi was the only one who used it. I believe it may have beena EL OS with the MAX ovalized shape. |
Grandis made MINI MAX frames in addition to MAX. My dad has a Ciocc made with MAX. I don't think this tube material was uncommon on bikes from the mid to late 90's.

Cudak, Yes please more pics.

Kurt- That Guerciotti would not last long in my shop as a bare frame, that begs to build me up!
|
Here it is... Im cleaning the frame now (sand and polish small imperfections plus retouch pain job and maybe add 4 coats of Poly-U clear coat ) and probably get it built like next week...
