Sakae Crankset info?
What's the difference between a Sakae SA crank and a Sakae SR? Equivalent, or is one better than the other?
|
I'm not familiar with the SR model. Sakae/Ringyo is generally abbr. as SR. Is there an SR model SR?
|
Jeez, talk about shooting myself in the foot!
Sakae SX v. Sakae SA!!! |
I believe one of them is 130mm BCD and the other is 110mm BCD. Otherwise quite similar "melt-forged" (i.e. "cast") arms with minimal finishing work.
|
Ok, melt-forged v. cold-forged was one of my questions. My SA is 110/74, and I'm looking at an SX triple of unknown BCD - I better ask! VeloBase said SXs can be 110 or 130, which seems odd - could SX doubles have been 130 while SX triples have been 110/74?

I don't know, about 40-50 minutes with mine and I think it looks pretty nice:

I like these cranksets because they are a vintage triple crankset that looks at home on the bikes I've installed them on, my '78 Motobecane Grand Jubilé and the '82 FrankenVega Viva Touring that I'm building up. |
Not sure if that's correct. I pulled the trigger on the one I've been looking at, and it is an SX, a triple, and the seller says it's 110/74. If so, the earlier claim that SXs came in both 130 and 110 is probably the better statement. I don't have it yet, so I can't confirm. I already have an SA triple, but now I have more options for gear phreaking.

FWIW...The Sakae SA set I have is 110BCD.

I have the Sakae CX triple (granny stepped). It came on my 86 Passage. Nice stiff crank.

The one I'm getting is 48/44/28. I have a 24 I could put on if I need it.
I'm thinking 13/28 in the rear with a Duopar, and a Huret or Suntour LePree front derailleur. |

That information is accurate as far as I know. I have one of each. I'm travelling now so I can't go look but I recall that that the 130 BCD is marked SX like the one posted by khatful and the 110BCD is marked SA. The left crank arms look the same and interchange, which I did to put the nicer arm on the nicer bike.
They do polish up very nicely with a bit of effort! http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...1/Shogun8s.jpg |
Ok, new question!
What length BB to these SX's like? |
Have I gone to the well too many times? Not even the people who OWN SXs and have them on their bikes can say what length BB they used?
|
My guess is that it would be 113mm. that is a typical double spindle length.
|
But I'm the one who just bought a triple. Sorry, should have reiterated that.
|
I'm using a SunTour XC Pro BB (124mm length, if memory serves) with an SX Triple, and it works. 122.5 might work better.

Sakae SA Crankset
I have a Sakae SA Crankset on my 1986 Trek Elance 310. It's 110bcd 170mm arms with stock 40t/52t rings. It's a strange Crankset being it's a double crank but has #5 74bcd 'concave starter holes' that don't have threads tapped in. I've done this converting the crank to a triple by drilling and tapping the holes, then installing a 74bcd 28t biopace granny ring. Luckily I didn't need a longer bottom bracket spindle. There was just a 'smigine' of clearance <1mm btw. The granny ring teeth and chainstay. Very unusual but nice looking and stout crankset.
|
Yes, Sakae Ringyo used the same mold for both the double and triple versions. OEM builders could save a few pennies per crank by specifying the double version, as this meant SR didn't have to drill, tap, and install a third ring or develop a separate mold for a double crank.
