Peeling paintwork - damage limitation

I had some paint peel off the head tube of my Tommasini this evening - first time I've cleaned it.

It's only a small 1cm diameter area - leaving gleaming chrome beneath, but I wonder if there is some way to ensure that it doesn't go any further.

I thought maybe running a fine line of super glue along the 'broken' edge might do it - and then obviously taking it very easy next time it comes to cleaning.

Would Tommasini supply some retouch paint, do you think - and would I be able to apply it to chrome anyway?

Thanks.

Hmmm.. that's just the typical QR paint over chrome syndrome suffered by many classic Italian bikes. It's so common a problems as to almost be "normal. I remember looking at frames at my LBS back in the 80s with zero miles new framesets already having their paint flaking off all over just from the shop owners unpacking and handling them for display. It was so bad that some shop owners did not even want to let customers touch the frames. Cioccs were some of the worst with the QR paint problems.
You should touch it up with some matching automotive touch up paint asap so you can seal back the edges of the paint around the area where you suffered the paint release and arrest the peeling, but short of a full frame re-painting with maybe some sort of better adhearing/newer tech paint primer, you will just have to be careful when handling/cleaning your bike to preserve the original finish.

Wipe it carefully.
Mask just that area.
Shoot some hobby clearcoat.
Rub it out a bit.

It is NOT a permanent finish, or designed to do anything but protect that spot a bit.

+1 Sorry Monkey Face, I forgot to tell you about that little detail. Exploding paint on my 1994 Sintesi as well.

Still better than the paint on any of my Colnagos.

They just may have some that will match, yours is of a recent vintage. Isn't yours Ferrari red?

https://www.tommasini.com/colours.html

email them, they are really on top of service. I get return notes within 24 hours. info@tommasini.it

Worth a try. Don't worry too much though, a little paint loss on these is part of the package.

I use automotive paint - seems the mercxk is the same color as a 2005 Volvo.

ps - it also comes with clearcoat

Thanks everyone.

I'll contact Tommasini - thanks for the link gomango - I think it is Ferrari red, although I would say it's a 'slightly dark bright red' (as a graphic designer I should do better than that) and it does have a slight metallic sparkle. Anyway, I kept the paint chips, so I guess I could send them to Tommasini if need be... or at least my local automotive bodyshop can match to them.

(Doubt if I'll get any pics up this week as I'm in London for a few days.)
