Wow... That can't be good. I assume it's a frame or a bike? Or is it only a fender? How far did it travel? From the crushing of the box it appears to lack any internal structure.

arex, thanks. That is basically the pump I have. The original one was a dull aluminum although I have seen painted pumps which may have been steel.

Another Raleigh 3 speed I'd love to have... Sturmey Archer was also a manufacturer of motorcycle engines and gearboxes that were widely exported to other manufacturers.

Germany was a primary customer until the Nazis banned foreign imports.

It is a multi media class where we watch some videos to show how planetary gears work, cover some history, and do some hands on work including a tear down of an SA hub.

If you have followed this thread then you know what it is all about.

Good grief, that almost looks like malicious damage. Doesn't matter though; it appears to me that UPS will be giving you a full refund. [they should]

Did seller have it insured for full value above the standard UPS coverage? [which used to be $50 per item but that may have changed; I've quit using them since they have stumbled]

If he doesn't then I'd insist that he make up the full difference ANDpay for return shipping. [which he probably will not want to do so you may end up with some nice freebie parts]

It's not malicious damage. Despite how we all want carriers to handle our stuff, they are too rushed to do it right, so they toss the stuff heavily. Negligence is a fair accusation, though.

At a previous job, our regular UPS guy always said to pack stuff like it was going to be tossed out of the back of a moving truck, because half the time it would be.

I buy a lot of stuff online and get deliveries from UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL, and who knows. Our front porch is within tossing distance of the front fence which is six feet high. Usually they slow down when they deliver, but not much. They don't beep or anything, they just stop briefly and toss, no matter what it is, unless signature is required.

Just before I came in, I saw a FedEx truck go down the street. Came in and checked the time, it was 12:10. Went up and down the street glancing at people's porches and in their yards thinking that Genius had mis-delivered. Across the street and down a bit somebody had a package on the front porch. I sneaked up and looked, but it was delivered correctly. Scampered back home.

With Amazon, you have to wait at least 24 hours before they will talk to you about a missing package, so, 24 hours later I called. I was expecting a bunch of grief, but no -- "we'll send another one, next day delivery." Ok! Next day, I'm sawing stumps.

About four days later, I got a call from somebody asking, "Are you Des Conhecido?" I expected it was another aluminum sidings salesman, but no. it turns out it was some guy who lives about a half mile away on an E&W ("North St", it runs E&W -- go figure) street (ours is N&S) with a house number about 1600 different from ours. "Just came home, I was out of town, there's a package on my front porch with your address on it."

Went over, and there's my chainsaw. Now I had two -- called Amazon right away to arrange the return. That was funny as they had to try to figure out which one I should keep and which one to return.

It's frustrating to have an experience like that. It's frustrating to have them break stuff and play soccer with your packages. But, it's really pretty hard to get mad at the delivery people. I have a brother-in-law who works for UPS. They are under a lot of time pressure, from what I understand.

Dynohub orientation?

I've been trying to find 40 hole and 32 hole 700c rims that match so I can build some wheels for a Sports. Finally realized that I have a 36 hole front Dynohub that would work on the bike so I ordered a 40 hole black CR18 and a 36 hole black CR18 from bikewagon. Never ordered from them before -- we'll see if the rims actually match when they get here. Apparently, the Sun rims, CR18 and Rhyno too, may be either welded or pinned and they may have brushed/machined brake surfaces or not. In the case of black rims, that means they are either silver looking or black on the brake surfaces. Best I can tell, both the rims I ordered have black sides. I found some 40 hole Rhyno lights and some 32 hole, but I think the brake surfaces wouldn't match. As I said, we'll see. For anyone who is interested, Bikewagon sells the 40 hole black CR18s for $22 with free shipping. They have an ad on ebay.

So, that got me thinking about the Dynohub and I can't remember which side has the Dyno and which side has the hub. Seems to me that the Dyno part goes on the right, but on the rear hub with the Dyno it would be on the left. Does it matter? I searched for images, and some people are destras and some sinistras.

If in the front the alternator portion is on the right. If in the rear its on the left.

That makes total sense to me. North St doesn't go north. If it did, it would also go south. It's called North St because it's at the northern end of town, no matter which end on it you are.

Makes sense, I suppose. There are some oddities of the way Houston developed in this area and if you think about it and look at the old maps from the early 20th century you can understand, perhaps, how North St maybe got it's name. Today, it's about 30 miles south of Houston's north end.

Thing is that North St is only about three blocks long. If you go west, it's Byrne St, if east, it's Glen Park St. North St intersects the North Freeway. The intersection of N Main St and North St is within 1/2 mile of the intersection of N Main St and North Freeway. I once had occasion to call 911 because of an unfortunate event at the intersection of North St and Houston Ave. Problem is that that is real close to the intersection of the North Freeway and Houston Ave which is also the intersection with N Main. It was confusing.

Houston is famous for fubar street names. Partially it's the result of the drainage ditches (also known as bayous) interrupting street construction and naming until later when bridges were built. For example, one of the streets I ride on frequently is York when I turn left onto it. Then it becomes Hirsch and then Waco and then Altoona and then Broyles and then Hirsch again. It's not quite a straight line from Hirsch to Hirsch via the other streets, so I think I know how it happened, but it's funny anyway. Probably another cause is that Houston has grown and absorbed other communities, incorporated and un, that already named streets at their pleasure. So you end up with Hillcroft, Voss, Bingle, and other names, all being essentially the same north/south street.

The owner of that very wonderful bike appears to be a sinistarian. I'm starting to suspect that the SA dynohub may be ambidextrous. Personally, I'm leaning to the right, as you suggest.

A lot of fun [or not so fun] stories here about the Brown Guys and Fred's Ex...

Bottom line is that someone's gonna need to make that fubar right; that bike was whacked. In my former life as a largish small business owner I found that shippers would cut corners - human nature being what it is - if you didn't stand your ground. Conversely, when you do, it's amazing how accommodating they can become.

Finally! Gift bike finished!

A couple of years ago I found a pretty nice example of one of the last Raleighs brought into this country that had been manufactured in Nottingham. A nephew who was working in Charleston procured it for me after I'd negotiated with and PayPal'ed the original owner's son. That gent's mom had bought the bike new in Charleston, S.C. and it had always been kept out of the rain.

My sister saw the bike when her son brought it home here to the Piedmont and she really took a liking to it.

So, I put it on the "roundtuit" list straightaway to fix the old girl up and gift it to her and I finally got it finished a couple of weeks ago.

[I'd planned to gift it to her at Christmas but my wife broke her ankle on Pearl Harbor Day last year - she's a regular titanium-enhanced bionic woman now!]

Anyway, a few notes on the pics, in roughly chronological order:

1] I really like the two tone frames in these last English Raleighs. Front reflector is another accommodation of Nanny; headbadge reads: The Raleigh, Nottingham, England.
2] I don't like the metal plate that the rear brake attaches to...
3] The OEM Brooks mattress saddle was gone and there was a run of the mill Schwinn branded MTB saddle on the bike when I bought it. If my sister is a good girl and rides the bike regularly I will replace this Selle Royal and surprise her with a Brooks B66S next Christmas...
4] In 1979 Raleigh had apparently done away with the "R" nuts on the cotter pins. The chain guard is distinctive to these last Raleighs.
5] However, they'd retained them on the front axle nuts.
6] A 1979 Sports had the "coffin" rear reflector; doubtless attributable to Nanny.
7] Hub is a February 1979 coded one.
8] I've put a rubber gasket around the OEM Pletscher Esge kisckstand; I like the way it mutes the "snik".
9] Shifter works great, hate that the face plate went missing. Again, if she rides the bike I'll remedy this make-do solution.
10] Seat tube detail.

That was my plan for a winter project.
Started watching for an old 25" frame in the early winter which is a mistake in a cold climate. Nothing cheap enough to strip.
Mentioned in the bike co-op about wanting to build 700C wheels with a 3 speed hub. Guy told me they might have just what I wanted. Took me to their storage and showed me a dutch city bike that they had put aside as not worth fixing up. Had Sturmey Archer drum hubs with 700C stainless rims.
Stripped the frame and scrapped it, cleaned the wheels and greased the hubs. Still couldn't find a frame so decided to use a single speed Trek Earl I had laying around.
It was a lot of work - the non-standard tubing sizes meant I had to make almost all of the fittings. Cut strips of stainless steel, bent them to shape and then polished. Amazing how hard it is to find silver parts anymore.
And of course, just as I was finishing up, I found my cheap 25" frame - a Raleigh Grand Prix, should be perfect.
The Trek is a bit small for me and with the drop bars, just too low - specially at the beginning of the season like this.
Not sure if I should build the Raleigh up as a second frame and swap the wheels in and out or just move everything over.

Stripped the frame and scrapped it, cleaned the wheels and greased the hubs. Still couldn't find a frame so decided to use a single speed Trek Earl I had laying around.
It was a lot of work - the non-standard tubing sizes meant I had to make almost all of the fittings. Cut strips of stainless steel, bent them to shape and then polished. Amazing how hard it is to find silver parts anymore.
And of course, just as I was finishing up, I found my cheap 25" frame - a Raleigh Grand Prix, should be perfect.
The Trek is a bit small for me and with the drop bars, just too low - specially at the beginning of the season like this.
Not sure if I should build the Raleigh up as a second frame and swap the wheels in and out or just move everything over.

So is that a drum brake in front & 3 speed hub/drum brake rear? Can any bike take drum brakes? Are there any special specifications for a front fork to be able to take drum brakes? Are those Sturmey Archer? I assume they are. So is that the old Raleigh or the newer one? Hard to tell.

Pre- '52 they went on the left. They had a different adjustable cone/locknut arrangement. Post '52 they should go on the right, but I don't think it matters as much as a regular Raleigh three speed front hub, where the adjustable cone must go on the left, as the dynohub has a locknut.
