Yes the Raleigh and similar British bikes have short cockpits. I am actually used to it and it doesn't bother me a bit. In fact it feels a bit weird for the first few miles to get "stretched out" on my touring bike which is a Taiwanese frame.

A DL-1 Tourist would be too big for me.

I prefer modern, proportionately-sized bikes for a reason.

I've been riding bikes for, well, a long time. The past few years, I've been really enjoying the more laid back, upright, slow speed casual riding on my vintage Raleighs. I find the geometry of the DL-1 and Sports ideal for this purpose.

My 1971 Robin Hood "Sports Model" (23" frame) has drop bars but a very short stem. A different setup for sure, but comfortable for me.

I've had quite a few arm, hand, and shoulder injuries over the years and really have no choice but to ride an upright seated bike to avoid pain. I find it preferable anyhow, a nice steady pace and ideal for taking in the sights. I've had my Rudge Sport for three years and it is dialed in to a very relaxed and natural feeling riding position. I haven't put the time in on the DL1 *yet* to get it to that ideal state. I should have the gearing solved by this weekend and will work on seat height and tilt along with handlebar height over the next few weeks. I need to play with tire pressure too to find the happy spot of comfort and low rolling resistance. Autumn is my favorite riding season so getting the DL1 dialed in is now a priority.

That is a sharp bike, well executed. Gold & white British bikes are my favorite color combination.

I wish I could take credit, but a minor cleaning and a saddle change is all I have done to the bike. It still sports its original bar tape and cables! You can find some more photos here http://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...e-capsule.html I hope to find a nice brooks for it someday. As to the bars, I like both upright and drop and own three of each. The Robin Hood appealed to me because I wanted a "3 speed Racer" when I was a young lad.

Raleigh Sports have short reaches for their size? Oh, Now I'm interested. My Phillips has a long reach, as I think it's for a taller person.

We used to do that (and the other which is flip the bars over) all the time as kids....of course we couldn't afford those 3-speeds so we did this with our coaster braked bikes....we felt pretty cool!

You know they come in two sizes? I have the large and still have two fists worth of seat post showing. Curse of being 6'-2" with long legs.

I have seen North road style bars in 1". So It wouldn't be too difficult to find a 7/8" stem with a 1" bar clamp that has more offset.

Hi everyone!

How long is the original rear reflector bolt on a 1970s Sports or LTD-3 supposed to be? I just took my rear wheel out for the first time and noticed that the bolt looked about ready to stab the tire to death. (Also, there was exactly one spot in the dropouts where the wheel or tire wasn't rubbing either on this bolt or on the chainguard or fender somewhere.) It's been like that for 42 years, though, so maybe it isn't as bad as it looks? Is this normal? Photo attached.

Did that with my red Schwinn Breeze. Bent over and pedaled fast! Don't think I was fooling anyone.

That modern tire (Schwalbe?) may be wider and taller than an original Dunlop EA3. Hence the problem. Trimming that bolt is not sacrilege IF you go you here and confess, invoking St Christoper as your patron saint.

Thanks - you're right, it is a Schwalbe. I only just replaced the original Dunlop and its tube, although the clearance can't have been *hugely* better on that. Is there a good way to replace the bolt with a shorter one, instead of trimming it? It's in the original rubbery reflector housing, and it looked like the bolt was underneath a flat metal plate underneath the red plastic disc and the foil backing and I wasn't sure how to take the housing apart further without damaging it.

Haven't done it myself but I have seen quite a few English bikes with them. Functional good looks and very traditional.

My older bikes all have more sensibly sized reflector screws, but my 69 Sprint has one similar to yours.Still, there's about a half inch clearance to the tire.This is the kind of lack of attention to details and stupid ideas that started appearing on the later models that I find aggravating. Fortunately, they are usually fixable and the basic design of the bikes is still sound. Just recently on my 73 DL-1, I went to shift into low, which I do a lot on my DL-1, and the cable went slack. The cable pulley slipped down on the seat tube making a nice scratch in the paint and wrecked the tubing sticker. I went to move the pulley back into position but the threads were stripped. Of course the threads were stripped. Sturmey Archer had eliminated the nut and simply folded the band material in half and drilled and tapped it. What a great idea! Must have saved them .000002 cents. I replaced it with an old two piece pulley that had a proper fine thread screw and nut.

my 74 sports ( unrestored time machine ) .. its pretty long ,but with the original tires there is plenty of clearance . i'm shopping tires now and don't want this to be a problem

I have a leather one that I haven't gotten around to installing yet. In the past I have used rubber stair tread, cove base, milk jugs, bleach jugs etc to make mud flaps for my fenders.
