That's BS. a good powdercoater would've masked the thimbles or popped them out.

I thought about posting my old Bridgestone ten speed here but it's not British and it's not Sturmey Archer. Same type of bike though.

@arex - I hear you. I could have demanded that they re-do the fork, but it's not worth the energy for me. It's fine. I started prying the thimbles out, but just decided to have them mask it.
@3speedslow - I've ridden it around the neighborhood and a regular dog walker in the park asked about it. He got a brief history on the Raleigh Twenty!

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I'll eventually get the decals from VeloCals and it will be finished. Likely get some Planet Bike or SKS 20" fenders for it also. I have kept all of the original components. They're in a cardboard box labeled "The Box" in the garage.

I have another little project that I just finished and will post it later today. It's a 3 speed that FITS! All original, one owner.

Ended up with a one owner, 1978 Raleigh Sports 19" Silver with blue headtube & seat tube panel. Don't think it ever had maintenance, so needed big cleanup. I did the usual repacking of both wheel hubs, bottom bracket & headset. Replaced brake cables/housings/pads and kept but cleaned cable for shifter. Needed new tubes and tires and a new chain. Has a Swedish Trygg dual leg kickstand which is nice and interesting.

The rear Cateye RR-950 reflector lens is damaged so if you've got one you want to sell please pm me.

I've only ever ridden 21" three-speeds and while comfy I felt like I was "on" the bike not really meshed in "with" the bike. This 19" bike just feels natural, like I'm not even thinking about fit - just riding along. I will keep the steel wheels - the chrome is nice.

What a beauty. Love the silver with blue accents, very elegant. I agree about the special section rims. They add to the overall classyness of the Sport. I have them on my 69 Sprite and wouldn't think of changing them.

I love your Twenty. What headset does it have, the plastic thing at the top or a real ball bearing?

Nice Sports, too. I was a shop mechanic in 1978 through 1984, and I sold some of those Sportses.

Nice Sports, too. I was a shop mechanic in 1978 through 1984, and I sold some of those Sportses.
I bought an Origin8 sealed bearing headset and took the nylon bushing piece out. So just the top nut used to preload then tighten the stem with the handle piece. I really like the brown saddle with this green - in person a nice, rich, subtle look. It's interesting trying to balance the classic original bits with the new modern items, hopefully with a classic aesthetic.

Yeah, the silver with blue seems to be less common I guess, however the Raleigh green and coffee are my favorites. The owner said she specifically chose the silver because it was different. Wonder if there was more than one Raleigh dealer in Chicago 37 years ago?

Can't find anything about Trygg kickstand made in Sweden. Spent a bit of time looking online to see if the company existed, or if it was a town or what else they may have made.

@michaelz28 - how does she like the ride of it?

Yesterday was the first day I was able to ride my Bates project, which I think I started nearly a year ago. The frame is one of the first to be built after Bates moved to Westcliff on Sea.


This frame employs the Diadrant fork and Reynolds Cantiflex 531 tubing. I was interested in how a Clubman with high end components of the era might perform. So that is how it is set up. Here's a close up of the GB handlebars:

The stem is a pre-war girder-style Reynolds Hiduminium which is fairly tall.


The crank is an Allez, which is the marque that Holdsworth used for their after-market line. They made the same crank for their machines. The red anodizing is how it was built in the 1950s! The chainwheel has 46 teeth. Lyotard 460 pedals are employed and would have been a common high end pedal of the day- this model was in production from the 1930s until well into the 1970s.

The hub is an alloy body FW (4-speed) set up with GB wingnuts- a typical high end installation of the period. Equipped with the Brooks Pro saddle, the weight of the bike is just slightly under 23 pounds. The ride is sprightly! Although the gear inches value is slightly higher than on my Raleigh 3-speed (and only on account of the 27" rims), in practice it feels like high gear is not high enough. So I plan to change out the 22T rear sprocket to a 20 or 21 and see how that works.

The ride is really nice- the bike is sprightly- responsive to input on the pedals- and not whippy at all.

I built it up- found the frame on ebay. It needed some work on the front fork. You might want to go to this website and look at all the wildness that was the vintage British bicycle scene:

GB made very refined hardware! Their Coureur 66 centerpull brakes were the best in the world bar none. I prefer their wingnuts too- they are easier to work with and lighter than the wingnuts Sturmey Archer supplied.

This One's Come Back...
This CCM Galaxie 3 speed was given to a former student a few years back. Sadly she's been deported back to Greece and has returned the bike to me.
I'll look for another home for it and should she return find her another one.....
It has a Wrights composite (man made leather) saddle.

@gster - was that Royal Endfield a single speed or fixed gear (not sure if you can tell by looking)? Fork looks new and those handlebars are wide and high. Maybe this was a post DUII bike build?
