It really depends on what you have on hand.

The tall frame bike in this thread is a later model than what we're thinking of here. They're not badly made, just very heavy for what they are. They tend to be very durable, though "dead" is a good way of describing their ride.
Yes, chr-mo steel is an entirely different subject, but I think, within the realm of mild steel bicycle frames, it is technically incorrect to lump them altogether into a term like gas pipe. Variations in the the alloy do produce significant differences in hardness and tensile strength that would be noticed by more experienced cyclists in terms of feel.

You never know, I never expected to find one around here until I found one in great shape on the Eastern Shore of Virginia with a dyno hub and lights.

Sure it is. Iowa is just the sort of place a bike like that would hang out. Just keep watching Craigslist.

FWIW I saw a DL-1 on CL recently for $150.... I live in St. Paul.

Found that DL in St Paul but it's 575 bucks. I would be interested but seller says pickup only. Anyone from there coming to Iowa soon that would like to bring me a bike for compensation?

Thanks, now how to get it to Iowa?

The Dunelt I found really sparked an interest in English 3 speeds and after riding it a bit I really feel in love. Here are a few pics of my garage sale found Dunelt.

If you search for Raleigh Tourist, Tourist, DL-1, DL1, maybe rod brake, and rod break; you may get lucky. Be patient as others have said.

How about a pair of them for that price? Or maybe they'd rod-break up the set (sorry, had to). I've posted these before but they have not budged for a couple of months and are about 100 miles from me. If I wanted a DL-1 I'd grab one of 'em. The non-Brooks one is more corroded and might be cheaper. Coastal area takes a toll on machines that live outside.

I would want the best one I could afford and with Brooks leather. I just am not mobile so would have to be shipped or driven here by someone coming this way. Anyone? Would reimburse gas, food, whatever.

That seller is in Sioux Falls, South Dakota:

You might have better luck with the one in Maple Plain/Bloomington - that's actually within the Twin Cities metro area.

Believe me it is not that easy. 73, retired, no garage anymore, live in apt so would want a nice clean example. I don't mind detailing them but for more mech work I don't have the room or the tools anymore.

I sent an email to the guy in Minneapolis asking if he would ship so waiting on reply. His is the most reasonable one and it also looks great.

No worries there, noglider. But the DL1 is my only English 3-speed at the moment.

Come Spring, I won't be able to resist posting photos of my Light Roadster Project. English by virtue of: 1) English Reynolds 531 Tubing; 2) Built (in Mexico, oddly enough) by former English Olympic Track Cyclist Ian Alsop; 3) Powered by Sturmey-Archer; and 4) Blessed by the Shirt-Tail Organizer of the Gentlemen Cyclists as eligible for the Lake Pepin 3-Speed Tour and the ABCE (All British Cycling Event).

Here is the headbadge decal I've had made up for it:



The bike itself will either be stunning, or slightly ridiculous. Won't know until it is complete. But I'll post photos either way. Heck, I suppose I could even post a build diary here, if the 3-speed purists wouldn't be offended.

Even I know that would be going too far!

For good or ill, the Raysport was ahead of its time in terms of international cooperation. I believe the original bikes were built circa 1974. My humble efforts are an homage to the 1949 Raleigh Lenton Model 29, which I'm sure I've mentioned here before. Since I cannot have the real thing, I'm going to build my own idealized interpretation.

Better this than taking a Raleigh Sports and festooning it with modern alloy parts, no?

She's a beauty. I could fall in love too. Late 60s early 70s Raleigh made from what I see. Nice bike and worthy of a leather Brooks saddle IMO.

Let me interrupt this search for a DL-1 thread for a moment: How about vintage, American, three speed, and lugged?

Don't know if this ever got posted here, but came across this early 50's Schwinn Paramount on flickr. And yep, it's the three speed tourist version!




And here is the full flickr group for all the photos:

And the description from the photo album:
SN 563. The Paramount Registry calls this a 1951. I was just going on what the seller told me. They didn't change much from the 30s. Repainted by Waterford in the 90s. A custom build with NOS Super Champion 650B rims on a NOS Bayliss-Wylie front and mint 1955 alloy Sturmey ArcherAW rear with wing nuts, with Mitsuboshi Trimline 650 x 38B tires. Rare Stronglight 49 Cometition steel cottered cranks, Original style Schwinn handlebars and grips, British made lugged steel stem, Brooks B-17 seat and Schwinn bag, NOS Bluemels Lightweight fenders, repro bow rubber pedals. Chain guard is an original Schwinn one and matches the new paint almost exactly.

Interesting. According to the brochure, the "shpg weight" for that bike was 43 lbs. Folks here were just discussing the different frame materials between Schwinn and Raleigh, and how the Schwinns were notably heavier. That seems to support the theory. Has anyone here weighed a similarly-equipped Raleigh Sports?

Of course the Paramount would be the ultimate but way out of my price range. Is a beauty though.

Also @teisco... There's a service called Roadie.com that might help out in a pinch. For instance if the $150 DL-1 on CL that Salubrious mentions is decent then paying another $150 to have it delivered to your door might make sense. FWIW, I had a men's DL-1 brought to me from Ridgefield, CT last month and it was put together thru Roadie...
