If anyone is looking for a matched pair, we just don't have the room for them, but I'm willing to take a look for you if really interested. If $200 for both bikes, it's not a bad deal at all. Also note these are Florida bikes (bad thing) but garaged the whole time (good thing).

This flyer caught my eye at the grocery store this evening and I was delighted to find details beyond the paint. Large hubs suggest Dyno or drum brake, or both. Groovy fork blades, heron chainwheel, rear stand, peaked fenders.

There's a similar light at most hardware stores that has a much stronger magnet on the back than the HF light does. Only costs a little more, too.

Also, since that Harbor Freight light isn't designed for bikes, and the lantern bracket will mean it will point straight ahead, it may do more to annoy other oncoming cyclists and other road users than anything else...

Modified New Hudson
This bike has been kicking around for a few years. It was originally for sale at a bike Co-op in Hamilton Ontario. It's for sale again. A 1950's New Hudson 3 speed with modern drum brakes/hub, a modern bottom bracket and handle bars. Asking price $250.00 CDN. I would think the hubs alone are worth that much.

What is a Scorcher (of the 1890s)?
The question came up on another blog as to "what is a scorcher?" in reference to an 1896 pledge by a cyclist not to be one. A cyclist who was a scorcher was commonly understood to ride aggressively at high speeds outside of controlled races risking crashes with other riders, pedestrians, and others. The scorcher was also commonly criticized for his (or her) less than upright seat on the bicycle. (This posture, however, was perfectly OK during a race . . . ) Since the bicycles of the day either had no brakes at all or generally poor ones compared to what we are used to today, the potential for mayhem was that much greater.

In a modern day vernacular, scorchers are typical messenger bikes. Stripped down, go-fast utilitarian bikes with low bars and an aggressive stance. Bikes for hyped-up proletariat rebels (whew)

scorcher! Never heard that before, but that was me back when I was 12 to maybe 14 or so. I built a 3 speed from junk day parts, painted it bright yellow, masked off stripes with electrical tape and over sprayed it black so I ended up with a black and yellow bumble bee paint job. Flipped the rusty northroads around and made it my mission in life to go everywhere as fast as possible.

Ah, life is ironic. Look at me now. An old geezer sedately peddling along on his roadster. I finally got around to taking some side-by-side pictures of my 1937 Raleigh Tourist and the ANT that I built up with a lot of inspiration from it, and then I took the Raleigh for a quick spin. That was the first time I've ridden that bike since November, when it slid out from under me on some unexpected slush, and I bent the right crank arm. I plan to ride it to work tomorrow (the one-year anniversary of when I bought it), and straighten it back out. After riding the ANT a lot lately, it's interesting (but not very surprising) how different it feels from the Raleigh that I modeled the build after!
