A Tale of Two Supercycles

$_2x7.jpgHere's a 1967 3 speed Raleigh built Supercycle in racing trim. Supercycles were made by Raleigh for Canadian Tire stores here in Canada and sold very well. I'm sure my first real bike was a Supercycle (single speed). I wonder if the gold colour was a custom mix for these bikes. Currently listed on Kijiji, Toronto @ $300.00

The bike below is also listed on Kijiji, Toronto. However, it looks to me as if the front forks are bent. Listed @ $240.00

I suspect the drop bar Supercycle isn't Raleigh made. Crank, stem, crown, mudguards and the rear dropouts all look very 'CCM' ish. The upright Sports looks all Raleigh correct.

Can you really get $300 for bikes like these in Toronto these days? Man I couldn't get $100 on the east coast.

Good eye for detail. You're could be right about the CCM version. However, it does have a cottered crank
I think the prices are high as well.
People are hoping to cash in on the "hipster" appeal of these bikes.

Thanx! That's what I thought as well but wanted to see what everyone else thought. I wish I had tried drilling before doing all the banging trying to get that cotter out. Now to pull the other and clean it up.

Another Tourist

Picked this one up today from my friend Brian in Peterborough. He was coming into the city so we met up. Complete bike minus the pump, a little rough but functions well. This will form part of the fleet I'm assembling for a new TV show. This is number 3 so far.
There's a sticker on it that says "Al's Bicycle Repair Shop, Orchard Park, N.J."

I'm afraid that's too far from where I am (Boston, MA) but wanted to say that I grew up in Union County, NJ (Cranford), and good to see some Raleigh 3-speeds kicking around there. I have no memory of anyone owning one back in the 60s and 70s. Schwinns, on the other hand, were very popular.

A brake question

I used a pair of Tektro 559 brake calipers for my scorcher project. They are very well made and I like how easy they are to adjust. They are set up correctly, but they have a bit less braking power than my other 3 speed Sports type bikes with their usual steel calipers and short "Continental" salmon Kool Stop pads. The cable casings are new and I'm sure there's come compression going on, but the old casings on my other bikes are nothing special. In my opinion there's no shortage of pressure of the pads against the rims. Could it be that the salmon Kool Stops are just that much better than the material used for the pads that came on the Tektros? It's not bad enough for me to change at this point. The scorcher stops plenty well enough. It's just that it seems odd that these brakes, with their extra mechanical advantage don't have more power than the old fashioned brakes with the Kool Stops.

I bought a 24" Raleigh DL-1 .This is a model that originally came with rod actuated drums, but came to me with a non-raleigh not-drum front wheel. The front drum rod is zip-tied to the front forks. The rear hub is an ab marked 63 and looks to be in good clean condition, making the right noise and not sounding too dry. The frame paint is OK but I think I’ll have to strip/de-rust and repaint the mudguards. They’re just missing too much paint, and too much rust particularly on the rear. But both are nice and straight, with rod style struts. Some rust on the chrome parts has eaten through the chrome, but hopefully not too much. It comes with a lovely brooks saddle with curly twisted springs; also a battery tube and a half chrome, half plastic headlight. I’m in love with the geometry! The gears sound good – I need the weekend to go over it all and get the shifting and rear drum adjusted, and take it for a little spin. With no front brakes it will only be for a short pootle. I have a SA front drum but it's alloy – a steel drum would suit the bike better I think, but I don't know if I'll be able to find one of these. So I’ll be on the search for a westwood wheel or rim. I used to have a pair in the 700A size (28 x 1 3/8 or 742mm) and now wish I hadn’t sold them! Oh well. The front wheel is this 742mm size, but not westwood. The photos I took were too low light to post, so I'll post some on the weekend.

It looks like I'll have my LTD-3 finished sooner than I thought. I ordered the rims and tires, a longer alloy seatpost, and picked out a Brooks Cambium C17s for it. I think I'll have to cough up some more money for the matching Cambium grips.

Tonight, I overhauled the rear hub. It was my first time tearing one of these apart, and it was simpler than I expected. The left hand cone and bearings were very rusty, but everything else turned out fine. Luckily my shop had a cone in stock. Here are most of the parts laid out:


Now the hub feels great, almost as smooth as a normal hub, and much quieter. I think the next phase will be stripping the bike down to the frame to clean it, apply frame saver, and overhaul the bottom bracket and headset. Does anyone have any tips for getting a modern hub to work with the stock fork? I have a SP Dynamo hub I want to use. I have no issue spreading the fork and realigning the fork ends, but I'm not sure the best way to make it play nicely with the weird fork ends these bikes have. If nothing else, I might be able to find or make a set of washers that will do the job.

@Arrowana, I've taken an adjustable wrench to the fork tips and just spread out the opening to accept a wider diameter axle.
