What I have now is a recovered B-66 and it is my new favorite. This saddle is double layered where my B-72 broke. I have had little experience with leather saddles but, my backside knows what it likes! This makes riding a pleasure and I love the look. Check him out! Thanks Big Chief and RHM. I will be out riding!
Rudi did an amazing job with that saddle. Looks great. Yes, it matches a classic English roadster perfectly.

Uhhh... I am impressed. But I wish I could see that dark green better in the photo. I'd still think it was black if I hadn't been told.

Paul, I am no expert and would never pretend to be. What I know is that I took a leap of faith based on the wealth of information I have received on this thread. My thoughts are all the big corporations are looking for ways to cut costs because all business these days is run by the bean counters, and we the consumers and quality are suffering for it. Here is a craftsman building something that will last. The info was dead on. I have never seen a new Brooks saddle but, when I compare the RHM recover to the ones I have, I would definitely prefer the recover. I also believe the older frames are probably built of better metal. ( I will step off the soap box now)

I am not a purist. My bikes are not show bikes.......they are riders. I am looking for something that performs better and retains the classic looks and vibe. I have found that which I sought! So guys, don't toss those old frames when Rudi can breathe a new and better life in them! Besides, in a few years these RHM recovers will be classics too!

Pricey Raleigh? You Decide!

A Toronto Kijiji listing for a seldom used Raleigh Twenty Shopper.
Bike appears complete and original with very little wear.
Comes with accessories and paperwork.
Seller is asking $650.00 (CDN)
Now looking at the math...

The Shopper sold for approx 38 pounds in 1970
using an inflation calculator, that equals about 596 pounds today
or $835.00.
The American Price list from 1968 has the Twenty at $100.00
or $715.00 today...
So perhaps $650.00 is not unreasonable.

The price range for 20s in New England seems to run from 150-250 and usually they are folders. This one is exceptional. Top of the line, all the goodies and excellent original condition. The price does seem excessive, but it does stand out from the competition. At least there's some reasoning behind the asking price. Lately, I've been seeing huge asking prices for DL-1s on CL. This puzzles me. These heavy roadsters are a sub market of a sub market. Even here there are only a handful of fans for these bikes. You would think that they would be a harder sell than a Sports. Here's a good one asking a hefty $750.

Nonsense, I've been verbing nouns for years, but I do not generally noun verbs as much.

Modificate is one of my favorites. A backformation from modification, it means what you think with an implied fiddly aspect. Need to make a Sanyo BB generator work with a kickstand? Modificate by bending metal strap to be a hanger. Need to make a Pletscher rack work with braze-ons? Modificate by cutting off the mounting plate and drilling holes in the arms so it fits (it was already cracked).

I agree it's good to be careful but there's no stopping it. Even the verb "stop" started out as a noun ("stuppa," fiber used to plug holes.) And the verb in your sentence, "turn," came from a noun meaning "lathe"!

Language has real C&V spirit--it's all dumpster finds.

This Twenty has been listed before. Obviously with no takers. More than likely an inherited item.
I see decent ones here in the $100-$250 range as well.

And thanks for mentioning this system. Great thing to know about and I didn't. Not that I know when or if I'd be using it, because I have not really got a place to do spray painting (apartment living).

I admit...I scorcherize bicycles, tank up my car and sometimes I'll sit and guit when I supposed to be out working.

I'm persuaded, as long as the conversion doesn't use the -ize suffix. I could live with prioritate, not prioritize, and demonate, not demonize.

Edit: Except scorcherize. Holding that one close.

Five or so years ago, I think it was, someone here in NYC--the guy in my bike shop has done some bike work for him--had two near-mint mid-50s Raleigh Sports up on eBay. A diamond frame/step thru pair in black. It appeared they'd been ridden around the block once and then parked in a perfectly dry, heated garage for half a century. He detailed the things brilliantly, they probably didn't even look that good in the store. Also, the copy he wrote to go along with the posting--he did everything except invoke the ghost of Winston Churchill and quote the St Crispen's day speech from Henry V. You'd think you were buying one of the last surviving Wright Bros bikes. He was asking $10k for the pair. No idea if anyone paid.

Edit: There, I did it myself without even thinking. Detailed.

I am going to try out modificate OTJ because I do quite a lot of it and I don't think it gets enough appreciation.

Anyone seen The Death of Stalin? To quote Georgy Zhukov's (immortal, delivered with best Yorkshire accent) words after dispatching Lavrentiy Beria, "There's that done." So for my pushed in crank. Job done. Bike has a nice ride. I've never been on a B66. A bit bouncy? I'm kicking myself over those B72 frames I tossed out.

No bounce on either of my B66 saddles. Maybe I have too much to bounce. They are all comfort to me. The B72 is good but I like the 66 better. Another time when BC pointed me in the right direction.

Stop kicking yourself brother. Those are behind you and, we ride forward!

The B-66 is sprung fairly hard, so I don't consider it bouncy. I do prefer the B-72. If you ever have an old Brooks frame, gift (I couldn't resist) it to Rudy. He does great work.

Maybe it depends on how much you weigh. I'm 180 pounds and the springs seem just about right. I like that they're thin in front and stay out of my way, but wide at the back with springs that absorb the harsher bumps. Perfect for upright roadster riding. I do have problems with most of the cheaper sprung saddles that came standard on the lower priced 3 speeds. They seem to be sprung for riders considerably lighter than me and do feel bouncy. And I don't like the wide, chunky fronts they have.
