I hope it is! It would be great if this NOS spindle ended up being useful. It came in a lot of 6 I bought on eBay a few months ago. Thanks to their magnifying mouse over pictures, I spotted an elusive 08GC in the bunch and just couldn't let it get by. But this one, I'll never have any use for. It's junk to me. Even if you think there's a chance of it working, let me know. I'll send it off to you. I could also take the BB apart on that junker stepthrough in the barn and have a look at that too.

I would like to accept but would feel better with a swap, although I don't know if there's something you'd want.
Will try to PM

In the Spirit of the Season
I rode my DL-1 today around the local cemetary, to get some photos that portray that Halloween spirit.

It was foggy very early this morning. That would have been ideal. Unfortunately, the sun came out halfway through my shoot.
I see someone decided to desecrate... er, I mean decorate one of the graves with some kitsch from Walmart:

Hopefully the current resident of that plot has a good sense of humor.
The Raleigh, which after almost a year in storage required me to simply wipe off the dust and top-up the tires, rode as well as it always has. That's why I have named this one "His Majesty, King of Bikes".
You get that regal feeling sitting tall in the saddle. And somehow it seemed the only bike suited for this particular mission. Still a keeper, my DL-1.

I have 3 635 ERTO wheeled bikes. The difference between them and a regular 27 wheeled bike is negligible. I have 3 bikes that are the same but 2 are 28s and 1 is a 27.

This one looks pretty beat for the ask. One photo shows loop downtubes and there's no mention of a ladies' bike in this ad.

+1 on good rims and complete. Parts are hard to find for these. Funny how people ask a premium for DL-1s. $150 would be the asking price of a very clean Sports of the same vintage. You would think they would be more difficult to sell than a Sports. A higher asking price for DL-1s seems to be common, but I can't help but wonder is they really get the prices they ask.

Aside from the actual age of the bike (1975 for example),
the design of the bike is much older still and made with the same machines from the 40's.
I know a lot of young people who say they want a vintage car (Beetle for example)).
Compared to a modern car it's like driving a tractor.
It was designed in the 30's and essentially the same car for it's
entire run.
I still get the 65 Corvair out in the summer and you really have to pay attention!

I think the main reason the big roadster appeals to me so much is because of the way circumstances are for me at this point in my life. I used to ride to go places. Sometimes I would ride with friends all day. Now, I don't have friends that ride or days off anymore, but I have free time in smaller bits everyday. I have time for short rides. Just a loop. Now, it's all about the experience. Just getting out and feeling the wind in my hair and taking in the countryside. So now instead of different rides, I ride different bikes to make it more interesting. I tend to binge ride different bikes for a week or so. When you're only riding 6 miles, efficiency doesn't matter much. The overall experience of riding the DL-1 is so different than any other bike. The only word I can come up with is elegant. It puts a smile on my face every time, although it's not the bike I would pick for a 50 mile ride through hilly country. You are right...they aren't for everyone.

Pit Ponies
i think the original roadster was designed in the early twentieth century, a time when Britain was at the top of the economic power. after ww2, they decline and struggle. i think there is correlation between economic strength and people average height. during an after ww2', Britains were probaby not as well fed as their ancestors in the early 1900.
The current Queen is less than 5 foot tall. Queen Victoria was 2 inches shorter . I doubt either ever went hungry.

BSA Headset Update
I'm still a little confused but will work through it...

On the left is a typical Raleigh cup with a built in bearing race.
The BSA cups are bare with a separate race as an insert (right).
The bearings that came out are much smaller than the standard 5/32" and
I'll have to visit the LBS to determine size and get some fresh ones.
Even so, the upper and lower races a slightly different in size.
One sits nicely inside the cup while the other "floats" a bit.
I'll slam it together and see what happens.

Those would be 1/8" bearings. Looks like someone mixed and matched.

Birmingham. CCM's didn't use full fork crown caps or cottered cranks on 99% of their bikes. Here's 3 types they used...the Road Racer/Flyer path bike in red, the Delivery bike in black and almost everything else in blue. These don't apply to bike boom or later models.

BSA Update
Some progress.
Roughing in parts

I've used the original spindle but will swap out when the new one arrives.
Still need to get some 1/8" bearings to finish the headset.
I had a nice pair of brake levers in the bin
and the calipers cleaned up nicely.
The front rim and tire are both good.
The rear wheel is not great. The 61' hub seems fine
but the rim is rusty on the braking surface.
I have another, very clean hub/rim (also 1961) to fit
but it's badly out of true.......
Bass guitar in bg is a 60's Aria Diamond.

Made in Canada Raleigh

Here's a nice one, priced at $80.00, here in Toronto.
What does Made in Canada really mean?
The Canadian Government imposed heavy tariffs on imported bicycles in the 1970's to encourage
domestic sales and production.
Bicycle parts/spares were not included.
Raleigh, Peugot and others set up "factories" here to
assemble "Canadian Made" bicycles.
I don't know if anything was actually made here or
if parts were just shipped here and assembled.
I own a Canadian made Superbe and the only difference I see is
the colour. An English Superbe is more of an olive green where as the
Canadian, is a forest green.
