Ive been calling it a Canadian model.
A few years back I bought two 10 speed 1975-76 Raleigh Sprites in Emerald Green from their original owner. A Matched set of 21"Step Through and a gentlemen's 23" frame. The ST was made in Canada, (R) and the 23" in England (N). They were purchased at the same time in the same shop in Ottawa ON. The only difference I could detect were the different pedals (curved, solid style). I ended up
selling the pair to Backpedaling in Guelph ON as Missus. browngw disliked the friction shifters and continued to ride her modern Giant.

I read somewhere you have to be careful how low you gear an AW because they weren't made strong enough for granny gears (gear inches in the 20s? That's what I consider a granny gear). Not sure how true this is; others probably know for sure.

I have ran them as low as middle 20s gear inch wise and never had and issue. I am fairly smooth on the pedal stroke however. The old aw hubs are much stronger than rated in my experience.

I haven't sorted out my own gearing requirements (or aspirations - lol!) for this bike. The AW with 48/17 gives a low/high of 58/103" and with 48/23 (I also have a 23 kicking around) it's 43/76". If I add a front granny ring of 26 teeth (I know, difficult front shift) I would get for 26/17 a low/high of 31/56" to go with the 58/103". It wastes a gear option, but it shows the challenge of getting down to 20" If that's what S-A actually designed to, that might not have been a poor choice.

But this suggests a HS+G in the front could be pretty nice.

1930 Hercules
The Paint Shop

Painted outside and moved in to dry.
It's still cold and rainy here in Toronto.
In the early 30's Hercules was the best selling brand and
the lowest price.
Some of the finishing and welds are a bit rough.


For a bike as old as this I'm impressed with the quality of the components.
It all came apart with little effort.
Even the fixed cup just slipped out.
Bearings/cups/races have all cleaned up nicely with little evidence of wear.
That Metal Restore product does work. It just takes a few days of soaking.

Thanks for the tips and comments. It was a lucky find for this area certainly. It was also free which helps a lot. It should help me finish up the Superbe for Spring. I'm happy to get a '79 AW to rebuild because I've recently added a 1953 FW hub and shifter to my parts bin, which I would like to use in a commuter build. I want to practice on the AW to make the FW overhaul easier. I'm wide open on the future frame. I've considered finding a UO8 for this purpose. Internationals and Grand Prix frames are hard to catch and often quite expensive here or usually the wrong size (I am 6'2).
