Thought this was funny and possibly a bit shady

This was posted in Harrisburg PA Craigs. The church has got some high end tastes. Perhaps he is doing Gods work. Maybe I am just a skeptical cynic. Smells like a flipper to me.

looking for road bikes with the skinny tires. not looking to pay a lot.

I am looking for older road bikes that work or need work. I am trying to get some extra bikes and trying to start a bicycle riding club for the adults in my church. I don't need many to start. I enjoy working on the bikes. I am thinking this will help keep us in better shape. Please let me know what you have and what you are looking to get out of it. would mostly like free road bikes. doesn't matter if its stripped down frame. I may build it back up using another cheaper bike.

looking for brands like bianchi, Campagnolo, Trek, Cannondale, Fuji, Motobecane, Peugeot, Raleigh, Schwinn, Pinarello

Location: steelton

A bit shady? Yeah, it's someone trying to find bikes to sell.

JunkYardBike 03-04-10 06:13 PM

I must be a total sucker. Sounds like it could possibly be legit. Too bad Harrisburg is too far for me to donate anything!

JunkYardBike 03-04-10 06:15 PM

Oh, and I like the last maker listed...Pinarello. I may have one buried somewhere in my pile of bikes...

Shp4man 03-04-10 06:19 PM

Huh. He doesn't want Huffys or Murrays. I wonder why. :p

EjustE 03-04-10 06:20 PM

I am so inclined to email this guy saying that I have several bikes I am not using and willing to donate and ask for directions to his church :)

Primitive Don 03-04-10 06:21 PM

I have a Campagnolo bike I'll be glad to donate.

auchencrow 03-04-10 06:31 PM

I can't speak for where all you dudes are at, but all the Detroit church ladies ride Pinarellos to the quilting-Bee.

strop 03-04-10 06:33 PM

On a similar note I'm looking to start a Motor Club at my local church and am looking for vehicular donations. Looking for brands like Pirelli, Ferrari, Maserati, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Porsche, BMW.

Why not ask to join one of the church's rides? If he calls your bluff, you're gonna have to find some religion fast!

Exit. 03-04-10 07:15 PM

Continuing the long-standing tradition of conning people out of their belongings in the name of the Church. Good on him.

jet sanchEz 03-04-10 07:58 PM

hrmmmm, I would email him to get his contact info so that I wouldn't accidentally sell him anything nice in the future...

(that kind of reminded me of that REM song)
I can politely refuse indicating scheduling conflicts

And, just in case anyone thinks this could be me:

It is not me.

But it has USA Zorro written all over it.

I understand your point but Trek, Cannondale etc are no Porsche, BMW etc. except the Pin

I can't wait to see how this tuns out. :)

Drillium Dude 03-04-10 09:30 PM

I can't imagine a church bike-riding club could be that large - or that discerning! Taking the possible low number of members into account, I wonder why he didn't specify sizes? To me, that's the biggest indicator that he's a flipper.

Chicago Al 03-04-10 09:41 PM

This brings to mind nothing so much as the Roald Dahl short story 'Parson's Pleasure' about a slick antique wheeler-dealer who would disguise himself as a touring parson in order to get access to the houses of elderly widows and swindle them out of their heirlooms. It must be in PD now as it's on the web. If you have a few minutes you might enjoy it, and we might even imagine a way to turn the tables on this bicycle-scamming 'clergyman.'

Nothing wrong with being a flipper.
More than plenty wrong for asking for bike donations for a church (or any other non-profit institution) if you are looking for free bikes to flip. Unethical, illegal, and huge bad karma to boot.

(still haven't heard from the guy after I told him I had 2 Bianchis, a Trek and a bike with Campagnola (sic; I couldn't help myself) components, which I would be more than happy to drop at his church if he gave me his church's name and address)

Things like this really pi$$ me off. I volunteer with a stellar place that lives on bike donations, gets inner city kids off the street, has a program to teach them bike mechanics (and a whole bunch of other programs like tutoring them and making sure that they stay at school), and perseverance and gives them free wheels (that they get to fix and tune) and a helmet after they graduate. And they learn to pass it forward. And, yes, the project lives on donations (andhere is the web site)... so people like that really really make me mad.

No sense begging for crap. I hope the Pastor gets what he's asking for.

E - Pi$$ed off? Well it's more than a little bit justified and just unfortunate there are so many like him. Thankfully there are guys like you doing good work to offset it - I watched the video, and what you are doing there is as commendable as what Pastor Flipper is doing is reprehensible.

Well, let's not forget the contributions of market traders, bankers, CEOs, elected officials, et al to this long standing tradition as well.

Reminds me of Herman Melville's Confidence Man, basically a cynical indictment of the entire American enterprise as one big con job.

Please don't use the "P" word with this crook. I have my reputation to protect!

Time for all the C&Vers who have received free parts and shipping from the Real Pastor (Bob) to stand up and be counted.
